“It’s her choice“- Joanna Jedrzejczyk suggests Carla Esparza is scared of fighting Zhang Weili
Carla Esparza vs Joanna Jędrzejczyk
After suffering a highlight-reel knockout loss to Zhang at UFC 275, Joanna Jedrzejczyk announced her retirement from mixed martial arts. The current leader in the division is Carla Esparza, and it was agreed that the victor would be the next in line for a shot at the championship.
Carla Esparza and Zhang Weili have proposed a time and location for a potential matchup, but the champion isn’t yet persuaded. Given Esparza’s remarkable performance, Dana White’s prediction that the victor will take Esparza’s place as the next in line seems likely to come true. In her post-fight scrum, Zhang offered a meeting in Abu Dhabi at UFC 281. On the other hand, the winner isn’t prepared to cede control to her rival.
“I’m the champion”- Carla Esparza asserts dominance, refuses to go by Zhang Weili’s timeline for title defense
According to Esparza in The New York Post, she stated, “I definitely don’t feel like I’m in a position where I should rush just because Weili wants a certain date, I’m not trying to go on her timeline. I’m the champion, and I feel she needs to go on my timeline.”
Carla Esparza, the current UFC strawweight champion, will face her choice of opponent, according to Joanna Jdrzejczyk. Jdrzejczyk recently stated in an interview with The Schmo that Zhang Weili ought to challenge Carla Esparza for the crown. The 34-year-old Polish combatant added that Esparza is free to pick her next opponent. She stated, “I don’t know. It’s her choice, her decision. Matchmaker is Dana but we’ve been told that one of us, the winner of our fight, mine and Weili, was going to be the next challenger…for the UFC strawweight belt. So, definitely, Weili Zhang deserves the title shot and I know that Carla might be scared but it’s her choice you know, it’s her choice.”
The rematch between Esparza and Namajunas was largely regarded as one of the worst fights in the annals of mixed martial arts, if not the worst. The MMA community was quite critical of Namajunas’ strategy and the guidance she received from Pat Barry, her boyfriend and a former UFC heavyweight. Although they were vociferous in their arguments for why they ought to have been the ones to celebrate after the fight, they had no ill feelings for Esparza.
