England thrashed South Africa by a score-line of 3-0 in the T20I series in South Africa and their ace all-rounder Ben Stokes was upbeat about the achievements that the current English side can make. Speaking to press, Stokes expressed confidence that the T20I side that England have is one of the best in the world and one that can beat any side in the world.

England have always been a strong T20 side and following the World Cup win in 2010, they came close to claiming another one in 2016 before Carlos Brathwaite came to the rescue for West Indies. Since then, England have only gone from strength to strength. They are now ranked No. 1 in the ICC rankings and have an eye on the T20 World Cups in 2020 and 2021.

‘We’re very confident in our ability’ – Ben Stokes

Speaking to press in South Africa, Ben Stokes spoke about how strong the current English side is. “It’s a scary thing to think about where this team could go when we’ve played some games together. We’re very confident in our ability as a side and what we’ve always done is focus on ourselves. We look at the other team – their strengths and weaknesses – but what we do well is concentrate on ourselves and put pressure on ourselves,” he said.

“We know if we play our best game of cricket we can beat most teams which isn’t an arrogant thing to say, it’s where we’re at. We know how strong this team is and it’s really exciting to be a part of it,” he added. Stokes was then asked about the Ashes in Australia that will follow and his preparations for it to which the 29-year-old diplomatically replied, “I don’t have the mental capability to look that far ahead or I’ll give myself a headache. I just take things as they come”

“Playing a part in all three formats you’ve got to stay in the moment. There’s a massive year coming up again and hopefully I’ll be able to play a full part in it. That’s the big challenge, just making sure we stay fit, especially throughout the lockdown and quarantine periods we have to go through now,” Stokes signed off.
