“It’s the cruelest of sports and everything but the way I look at it is we know the sacrifices going in,” says Joseph Benavidez despite his 4 losses in the title fight
Joseph Benavidez
Joseph Benavidez is not new to falling and getting back up. The flyweight veteran is considered one of the best flyweights in UFC of all time. The #2 ranked fighter has had 4 title fights in his entire career and has extremely close to bagging the UFC Flyweight Belt.
Recently, Joseph Benavidez went up against current UFC flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo, and has failed to beat the champ. The first clash came last March where he got knocked out by Deiveson in the second round. The second time he had the chance to win the title against Figueiredo, Benavidez was submitted in the very first round.
Though it was not the outcome Joseph wanted, the man has not lost hope and is looking to keep striving for it. Recently the title contender spoke about this in a recent interview with MMA Fighting. “It’s the cruelest of sports and everything but the way I look at it is we know the sacrifices going in,” Benavidez explained when speaking to MMA Fighting.
“We know the risks going in and we have the opportunity and the chance to chase greatness but we know the risks of that,” the fighter said in the interview. Joseph understands that the title fights have not been going his way but he believes it’s part of the process.
“We know the risks of being involved and we have a choice to chase greatness,” say Joseph Benavidez
“At the end of the day when you lose, it’s devastating. You put so much into it and you’re so close to these things and it is devastating but at the end of the day, we know what fighting consists of.
We know it’s a cruel b*tch. We know the risks of being involved and we have a choice to chase greatness and that is an amazing choice that a lot of people don’t have. Some people don’t have a choice.”
Benavidez is next fighting against Askar Askarov at UFC 259. The winner of the fight will probably get another title shot.
