Former Croatian tennis player Ivan Ljubicic has shared Boris Becker‘s views about the Wimbledon final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz won his second Wimbledon title, defeating the Serb 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 on Sunday (July 14).
According to Ljubicic, Becker stated that Djokovic had probably accepted the inevitable rise of the new generation in men’s tennis. The German had previously coached Djokovic between 2014 and 2016, helping him to six Grand Slams titles.
For the Olympic Games, he will definitely have the motivation, but what will happen after? Without Federer, without Nadal, the circuit is a little different for him, it’s not the same motivation. Boris Becker told me that it seemed to him that Novak had practically accepted Alcaraz’s superiority, which he had never done with Rafa and Roger. We are not far from the generational change. That’s life…
Ivan Ljubicic said on L’Equipe
Becker has made many remarks about Djokovic’s mentality before. Previously, he claimed that the 37-year-old stopped working as hard as he normally did after winning four Grand Slams in a row between 2015 and 2016, which contributed to his decline. The Serb failed to win any Major between Wimbledon 2016 and French Open 2018.
After Wimbledon defeat, Novak Djokovic turns attention to Paris Olympics
Novak Djokovic has lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final for the second year in a row. With the defeat behind him, he will now shift focus to the upcoming Paris Olympics and then the US Open in September.
After losing in straight sets to Alcaraz, Djokovic spoke about his future and made it clear that he has no plans to retire. the 37-year-old confirmed he will compete at Wimbledon next summer. Last year, he won three of the four Major titles, with his only loss coming against Alcaraz in Wimbledon.
So far in 2024, he has not won any titles, let alone Grand Slams. Djokovic will now turn his focus to the Summer Games, which get underway on July 26. Unlike his biggest rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, he is yet to win an Olympic gold medal and will be hoping to address that in the French capital.
