Emma Raducanu registered the first top-10 win of her career after beating the in-form Jessica Pegula at the Eastbourne International. She fought back from a set down to see off the American and reach the quarterfinals at the WTA 500 event.
Raducanu got off to a rather slow start against Pegula, who got the crucial break to take the lead in the contest. There was very little to separate both players in the second set and Raducanu managed to come through the tie-break to force the decider.
There was little to separate the two in the third set either, as both the players held their service games well before Raducanu broke her opponent to get the important lead. She denied the American a comeback as she held on to win 4-6, 7-6(6), 7-5.
After the match, the 21-year-old expressed her delight at the result and stated that it was an important win in her career.
I’m really pleased with how I managed to navigate again a really tough situation and I didn’t think to be honest that I’d be able to get myself out of it so I would say this match is one of the more meaningful ones to me. I think I’ve been going through some stuff and to come through is really nice.
Emma Raducanu said during the post-match interview
In the quarterfinals at the Eastbourne International, Raducanu is set to face Daria Kasatkina for the spot in the semifinals.
