Fortune favors the brave. Following a slow start to the final round of the U.S. Open, J.J. Spaun made an incredible comeback and claimed the 2025 U.S. Open. Following his win, he would share wholesome moments with his daughters.

The golfer, who suffered a heartbreaking loss at the Players Championship this year against Rory McIlroy, had a poor start on Sunday. He made 5 bogeys through his first 6 holes with an unlucky break at the second hole.

Despite a score of 40 in the front nine, he bounced back with 4 birdies and one bogey in the back nine. On the final hole, Spaun had 2 putts to win the U.S. Open as his challengers slipped up on the wet surface of the Oakmont course.

He would sink a long 64-feet putt on the 18th hole to walk it off and claim his first major championship. He became just the 6th player in the last 100 years to win the U.S. Open in 2 or fewer starts.

Before entering the final round, Spaun faced some personal problems. One of his daughters, Violet, was down with a stomach bug and continued to throw up. He would rush to a CVS in downtown for her.

In a video that went viral on X, one of his daughters would hilariously tell him that it was time to leave, as it was their bedtime. After hearing that they would be staying up late that night, she was unable to control her excitement and shouted ‘Yay‘.

In another moment, Spaun could be seen signing the U.S. Open scorecard with his two daughters beside him. Considering that he won this event on Father’s Day, this moment turned even more special for him.

J.J Spaun reveals how a Tiger Woods advice helped him overcome odds at the U.S. Open

J.J. Spaun seemed to be down and out after making bogeys on 5 of the first 6 holes. However, the American golfer kept on fighting and mounted a huge comeback later on to win the U.S. Open. Following the round, he revealed how a Tiger Woods advice helped him overcome the odds at this tournament.

While speaking to the media, Spaun revealed that he learned a “Tiger story” from Max Homa. The 34-year-old recalled the tale of the 15-time major champion shared by Homa and how that helped him.

I was having lunch with Max Homa at home. He was telling a Tiger story where he was like, ‘As long as you just like are still there, you don’t have to do anything crazy, especially at a U.S. Open.’ He’s like, ‘Tiger said this would happen, and the wind will switch, but you’ve got to just stay there. Even if you’re four back, you’ve just got to stay there. You don’t have to do anything crazy.’

Woods obviously knows a thing or two about coming back and winning at the U.S. Open. Out of his 15 major wins, 3 came at the U.S. Open, with the last one being in 2008. During that event, the golfer came back and won the tournament in a playoff round despite having an ankle injury.

How much money did J.J. Spaun receive by winning the U.S. Open?

J.J. Spaun finally won himself in the winner’s circle once again. After winning the Valero Texas Open in April 2022, the 34-year-old finally claimed his 2nd win on the PGA Tour. How much money did he receive though from winning the U.S. Open?

The U.S. Open this year had a high purse prize of $21.5 million. As a result of this, Spaun took home a winning cheque of $4.3 million, the largest ever-prize in a major championship.

Spaun was the only player in the field to finish with an under-par score, further signaling the difficulties of the Oakmont course. Robert MacIntyre, who finished as the runner-up with a 1-over par score, received $2.3 million for his efforts.
