Going into the 2024 NBA Draft, Purdue’s 7′ 4″ star Zach Edey was the most intriguing prospect. He is no doubt outstanding. However, the most important question was regarding fit and which team would benefit from his presence. It seems the Memphis Grizzlies felt the NCAA Tournament finalist would elevate them. No wonder superstar Ja Morant and his teammates were fired up.
The Memphis Grizzlies selected Zach Edey with a clear motive. They need a proper starting center who can man the paint and score simultaneously. This is why, Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant joked about facing his new 7’4” teammate on IG story. Morant used a scene from a hilarious Rush Hour movie featuring Chris Tucker. Desmond Bane celebrated the draft pick by sharing his excitement on X (Formerly Twitter) account.

He shared another post by young rising superstar GG Jackson with three salute emoticons. These reactions suggest the team is excited to get Edey as their new teammate. The star worked hard in college to prove he was one of the best big men to come out of this draft. His presence in the paint adds two intriguing scenarios.
One, it frees up Jaren Jackson Jr. from spending much of his energy manning the paint. Secondly, Edey’s ability to score inside while taking contact will help the Grizzlies exploit matchups. This selection paves the way for the Grizzlies to contend in the West next season.

The Memphis Grizzlies were already an established playoff contender. However, last season’s injuries to Ja Morant and other players were a blessing in disguise. First was the emergence of GG Jackson as a superstar forward. Then, their poor record helped them land the No. 9 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The new potential starting lineup looks like it will be Zach Edey, Jaren Jackson Jr., GG Jackson, Desmond Bane, and Ja Morant. They still have a sleuth of good players, headlined by Marcus Smart, waiting in the wings. One can only expect nothing short of an NBA Championship from this squad.
They have the perfect combination of athleticism, size, playmaking ability, and game-management experience to thrive. Evidently, Ja Morant and his teammates were fired up after this selection. Next season, even if the Western Conference is extremely competitive, the Memphis Grizzlies are legitimate title contenders.
