The 2024 US Open has thrown many surprises so far. Two of the top three seeds in the men’s singles event – Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic – have already been knocked out. While there have been a few more since the start of the event, Saturday (September 31) saw another controversy when Beatriz Haddad Maia was awarded a point despite hitting the ball on a double bounce during her match against Anna Kalinskaya.

This incident was very similar to the Jack Draper and Felix Auger-Aliassime controversy at the Cincinnati Masters. Maia got away with a point that gave her an advantage against Kalinskaya. Returning a shot early in the first set, Maia threw her backhand at the ball and managed to get it over the net. However, there were apprehensions about the legality of the shot.

The chair umpire took the help of a video review and it clearly showed that the ball had bounced twice before Maia got her racket on it and got it over the net. But to everyone’s surprise, the chair umpire deemed Maia’s shot legal and awarded her the point. Despite Kalinskaya arguing over it for a long time, the chair umpire stuck with her decision, leaving the player baffled.

This controversial decision put Anna Kalinskaya on the back foot and eventually saw her lose the match in straight sets to Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Russian was leading 2-0 at the time of the controversy. However, after that decision, she could win only two games in the entire match, falling 3-6, 1-6 to her Brazillian opponent.

The 15th seed had not dropped a single set in her first two matches, beating Lauren Davis and Anna Bondar in the first and second rounds respectively. She came into the match against Haddad Maia as the favorite since she was the higher seed.

Kalinskaya got the ball rolling as she quickly pocketed two games. She was looking to extend her lead when the two players were tied at 40-40 in the third game. However, the controversial decision changed the course of the match. What should’ve been a breakpoint for Kalinskaya with a chance to take up a 3-0 lead turned into a game point. Things went haywire from there as the Brazillian began dictating the terms.

Haddad Maia made 16 unforced errors to Kalinskaya’s 25 and hit three aces. Although Kalinskaya was better at winning points at the net (9/13), the Brazillian stayed ahead in break points won. Haddad Maia is set to face Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the quarterfinals.
