At the US Open, Jack Draper played his first singles match since his second-round exit at Wimbledon. Draper prevailed in four sets against Federico Agustin Gomez in the opening round at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Draper had withdrawn from the Masters 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati to recover from an arm injury. Prior to the singles tournament, he also competed in the revamped mixed doubles event alongside Jessica Pegula, with the pair making it to the semifinal.

Draper had his biggest Grand Slam breakthrough at the US Open last year, where he reached the semifinal of the tournament, losing to eventual champion Jannik Sinner. Speaking about his arm injury, the 23-year-old commented at the press conference:

I had to control my serve a bit to make sure I didn’t feel so much pain. At the same time, I feel that my precision is somewhat better at times. The power increase is quite fast, so I haven’t been able to serve at full throttle these past weeks. I got used to lowering the pace a bit...

Draper smoothly went past the first two sets, facing no break points and making no double faults in the first set. The third set was a bit troublesome for the Brit, as Gomez, with a forehand winner, saved one match point on his own serve in the tie-break.

Draper broke early in the fourth set and finished dominantly with no double faults, just 1 unforced error, and facing no break points in this set to seal the win with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-5, 6(7) -7(9), 6-2. He further added:

I needed tennis in my legs. I needed to play a three-hour match. I was almost a bit relieved when I lost the third set because my level wasn’t the best. Then, towards the end of the fourth, I felt like I was starting to improve more and more. It was good to have some competitive tennis in my legs, and obviously, in Grand Slams, you have plenty of time to do it.

Draper could be seen wearing a compression sleeve to provide support and comfort on his troublesome left arm. He will face Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the next round. Bergs cruised past Tseng Chun-hsin in straight sets in his opening round at the US Open. Draper and Bergs have met before once on court at Wimbledon 2022, where Draper won in straight sets.

Jack Draper signs with Vuori after stepping away from long-time sponsor Nike

As Jack Draper returned to court at Flushing Meadows, a big change was seen in his apparel, shifting away from his long-time sponsor Nike. He is now sponsored by Vuori, a California-based athleisure brand.

Vuori previously dipped its toes in pro tennis by sponsoring World No. 55 Marcos Giron in 2023. It marks a fresh change for Draper as well as for fans who have seen Nike usually clothe their tennis players in similar outfits.

As a part of the deal for Vuori, the World No. 5 will have his own signature line. At the US Open, he is seen sporting a chic sleeveless gray and white kit. Draper is among a wave of players stepping away from the big brands like Nike and Adidas in favor of smaller brands that can offer a more flexible and tailored approach.

Taylor Fritz signed with BOSS, Frances Tiafoe with Lululemon, and Andrey Rublev with K-Swiss. Earlier this year, Draper also became a brand ambassador for the British luxury fashion house Burberry.
