New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes did not have a good time on Thursday night. Not only did his team lose their third straight game, but he also found himself on the end of harsh criticism and trolls from fans for his action in the final goal.

With the team 4-3 down, the Devils left the goal empty and brought on another attacker to try and find a goal and force the game into overtime. They left themselves open at the back which led to the Detroit Red Wings taking full advantage of it.

As the Red Wings cleared the puck away, Michael Rasmussen controlled the puck and skated away to put it in the net to seal the game for them. In an attempt to prevent him from scoring, Jack Hughes skated back at full speed.

The 23-year-old ended up colliding with Rasmussen and fell on the ice. Meanwhile, the Red Wings stared down at him and celebrated in his opponent’s face. This was not appreciated by Hughes who started chirping away at Rasmussen leading to a verbal fight between them.

While tempers got flared up, no physical fight broke out. The referees were quick to separate the two players. As one referee dragged Hughes away, the alternate captain of the Devils continued chirping at Rasmussen.

Social media reacts to Jack Hughes’s action from 5-3 loss against Red Wings

One fan on X seemed highly disappointed by him and wrote that he (Hughes) “needs to retire from the sport“. Some others reminded him of his “People pay me to watch me” comment, something he once used this year to blast Viktor Arvidsson.

Check out that and some other reactions from X below:

After starting the season with a 5-2-0 record, the Devils have now lost three games on the bounce. This has seen their record deteriorate to 5-4-1. Hughes and his head coach Sheldon Keefe will now be hoping to avoid a fourth successive loss when they welcome the New York Islanders on Friday night.
