Jack Hughes etched his name in American sports folklore with a golden goal against Canada on Sunday. Following the win, he defended Auston Matthews and send a message to the Toronto media alongside his brother, Quinn.
Matthews, who is the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, also leads the United States as the captain. In his leadership last year, the Americans suffered a 3-2 overtime loss against Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship game.
Despite that loss, the American team named him the captain of the team. While he did not have much of an impact in the gold medal game, his leadership was valuable to the team.
The Americans took the lead in the first period through Matt Boldy. Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche would then level up the game in the second period.
With the two teams failing to find a winner in the third period, a 3-on-3 overtime period was required. In this, Jack Hughes turned out to be the hero as he buried an effort past Jordan Binnington to win the game for his country.

In the post-game conference, a reporter would ask Matthews what he would take from this winning experience back to Toronto. As the forward laughed off the question, Hughes stepped into his defense.
The New Jersey Devils star claimed it did not matter what anyone says now.
It doesn’t matter what anyone says now, Auston Matthews is a winner. Auston Matthews is an Olympic gold medalist.

Hughes’ older brother Quinn would then step in. He would send a message to the Toronto media and claimed Matthews’ leadership led them to the gold medal.
Yeah, that’s what the media in Toronto should be talking about. Auston Matthews led us to a championship.

Jack Hughes interjects: "Doesn't matter what anyone says now Auston Matthews is a winner."
Quinn: "That's what the media in Toronto should be talking about. Auston led us to a championship"
Matthews has found his name in the spotlight following the Maple Leafs’ failures in recent years. Despite having a “Core 4” of Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares for several seasons, the team was unable to bring back the Stanley Cup to Toronto.
Last year, the Maple Leafs were 2-0 up against the Florida Panthers in the second round. However, the series would go down to the final game as the defending champions fought back.
In Game 7, they were blown away 6-1 and handed another elimination. While one fan burnt his No.34 jersey, a former Maple Leafs star would take a huge swipe at him.
Jack Hughes heaps huge praise on Connor Hellebuyck following Team USA’s 2-1 win
Jack Hughes become an national hero on Sunday as he came up with the big goal to win it all for Team USA. While he received several applause, he heaped huge praise on his goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

The Winnipeg Jets star had a dominating game in front of the net. He faced 42 shots from Canada and was able to save 41 of them.
One of those saves included his incredible stop to deny Devon Toews. With the game tied at 1-1, the 3-time Vezina Trophy winner would sprawl back towards the crease and somehow save the puck from his stick.

While speaking with the reporters, Hughes claimed that Canada had probably outplayed them. He would laud his goaltender and expressed that he “carried” them to victory with his efforts.
Canada probably outplayed us tonight, but Hellebuyck was the best player on the ice. He carried us the whole way.

The Hughes brothers will now turn their attention to the regular season of the NHL. Jack Hughes’ team, the New Jersey Devils, will take on the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday, February 25 when the league resumes. Meanwhile, the other Hughes’ team, the Minnesota Wild, will go up against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.
