The New England Patriots are one of the worst-performing teams in the league right now, if not the worst. They are ranked fourteenth in the conference above the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals.
After a great start to the season with an upset win over the Bengals, the Patriots have lost four games in quick succession. The Patriots have averaged 12.4 points from five games, with a single-digit average (8.7) in the last three games. The consecutive losses have led Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo to bench Jacoby Brissett for Drake Maye, against the Houston Texans in Week 6.
Jacoby Brissett hasn’t performed well in the season so far. Brissett has a pass completion rate of 58.5 through five starts for 696 yards, throwing only two touchdowns. He’s ranked 28th in terms of QBR of 38.5 amongst the current quarterbacks.
Speaking to reporters, Brissett briefly described about the benching and his path forward in the league. He pointed out that he will come through from this, having faced many hardships in life.

Meanwhile, Offensive Coordinator Alex Van Pelt praised Brissett for his leadership and resilience. However, he noted that it was time to give Maye the starting role to help revive the struggling offense. Similarly, head coach Mayo said he’s confident in Maye’s abilities to hand Maye his first start.
Jacoby Brissett offers advice and excitement for rookie Drake Maye
In his media availability, Brissett remained as professional as he could be, despite being devastated to be benched. He offered a piece of advice to Drake Maye, who the Patriots drafted third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
When asked about the advice he gave Maye before his first career start, Brissett simply replied, “Play well.” He also noted that there was no specific destination when he moved to the sideline for the rookie to come in. Nevertheless, Brissett praised Maye and shared that he was excited for him.
Brissett also noted that Maye is excited behind the curtains for his first start. Maye had previously come off the bench amid the humiliating loss against the New York Jets in garbage time. The 31-year-old also noted that he had the same result as Brissett’s first career start which was against the Texans as well.
