Bagging an Olympics gold medal is a dream for countless athletes, and the ones who have done it know that apart from the sheer diligence and conviction, there is a certain luck factor that plays an elemental role in shaping up the fortunes of the winners. US gymnast Jade Carey, who secured the gold medal in the floor exercise in 2021, was also a part of the US Women’s team that participated in the 2024 Summer Games, and sadly enough, her landing proved to be a major talking point.
Carey fell backward and rolled out of bounds during her last tumble pass of her floor routine which led to an unfortunate deduction of nearly a point that could have been catastrophic for the former gold medalist. Talking in an exclusive interview with Olympics.com, she revealed that she was not doing well for the past few days and yet, was willing to put everything on the line.
I just have not been feeling well the past few days and haven't been able to eat or anything. I had, like, no energy today and didn't really have a sense of what was going on in my head. So, I just kind of wanted people to know that so, they know that there's actually something wrong.Jade Carey told Olympics.com in an exclusive interview
Despite an unfortunate slip-up in her final tumble pass, Jade Carey currently sits in the second position in the vault standings, having nailed a Cheng vault and a double twisting Yurchenko for a 14.433 average. With the numbers backing her, she is definitely one of the leading names to be in contention for the apparatus final.
Simone Biles’ heroics for Team USA gives a lead ahead of the final in the all-around event on Tuesday
Simone Biles spearheaded the charge for the Americans in a sizzling display with her squadron totting up 172.296 which was way beyond the grasp of any of their opposition who were in contention. Team USA cruised to the all-around finale which is slated to happen on Tuesday. Carey registered a score of 10.633 which will not allow her to defend her gold medal in this year’s floor events.
Biles, Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles occupy the all-around leaderboard, but it is going to be Biles and Lee who will be participating in the finale due to Olympics’ two-athletes-per-country rule. Despite a tragic end in the 2021 Olympics where Biles suffered a case of ‘twisties’, she came back strongly, registering the highest score in the team event.
