Fans flocked to Jacksonville on Saturday (August 9) to bear witness to the debut of the second overall pick and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter. Cam Little came out of the syllabus.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen handed Little the daunting task of scoring a field goal from 70 yards near the end of the first half. The former sixth-round pick’s previous best was 59 yards, but he practiced kicking field goals that travel even further.

Little scored one FG from 42 early on in the game, so he had the confidence to take a chance. He stepped up and smashed the field goal from 70 yards and reduced the score to five points.

The entire stadium was stunned by the amazing feat. Teammates flocked to congratulate Little.

Little’s 70-yard field goal attempt is the longest at any level of organized football. It was one yard longer than Ove Johansson’s record set in 1976.

However, it will not be counted as an official record because it’s the preseason. So, Justin Tucker’s 66-yard field goal against the Detroit Lions in 2021 remains the longest ever recorded in an official NFL game.

Last year, the Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey came close to overtaking Tucker. During the Cowboys-Browns fixture, Aubrey scored from 65 yards, making it the longest recorded field goal in the franchise’s history and the second longest in NFL history.

Cam Little kicks for a cause

Everyone saw Little’s big feat on TV, but not many are aware that he plays football for a good cause. He does charity work to better the lives of people with Down syndrome.

Little is well acquainted with Down syndrome because he grew up around one of his cousins who was diagnosed with the condition.

According to an article by FOX24, Little donates $10 for every field goal he scores from his own salary.

It allows us to continue to give age-appropriate things for people with Down syndrome, and that allows them to practice their independent skills and allows them to have a social community. We just finished Step Up for Down Syndrome for Down Syndrome Awareness Month. People create teams, and we created a team for Cam called ‘Cam’s Kickers.’ We have a shirt for him and his cousin that we are going to send to them.

Lindsay Dover, the Programs Coordinator for DSCNWA, said

Little hails from Moore, Oklahoma, and attended Southmoore High School. He had offers from the Air Force, the Army, Colorado, the Navy, Nevada, and Oklahoma State after graduation but committed to play for Arkansas in the SEC.

In Arkansas, Little scored 53 field goals from 64 attempts (82.8% completion) and had a 100% extra point conversion rate.

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Little in the sixth round in 2024. He beat out Riley Patterson for the starting kicker’s job and scored 27 out of 29 field goals. His longest was 59 yards against the Lions. Little was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Little went 4 for 4 in field goal tries against the Steelers in the Jaguars’ first preseason game. However, the Steelers proved a tough nut to crack.

Skylar Thompson and Mason Rudolph shared snaps for the Steelers. Rudolph took the early reps and was taken off after throwing 9 completions for 90 yards and one touchdown.

Thompson threw 20 completions from 28 for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Jaguars fielded four quarterbacks on the night. Trevor Lawrence left the game after throwing 6 completions for 43 yards. Veteran Nick Mullens and rookie Seth Henigan both completed 11 passes each for 150+ yards and one touchdown.

Running back Travis Etienne Jr. had two carries, while Tank Bigsby and rookie Bhayshul Tuten posted 6 for 24 yards each.

The game ended 31-25 in the Steelers’ favor, who will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next. The Jaguars are on the road to play the New Orleans Saints.
