The Detroit Lions are the only team to exist throughout the entire Super Bowl era without ever reaching the big game. Despite decades in the league, they’ve appeared in just 24 playoff games and won only nine. Their closest shot came in 2024—until the San Francisco 49ers crushed their hopes.
In the last season, the Lions were one of the favorites with their exceptional regular season record. The Lions finished the regular season with 15 wins and advanced to the playoffs as the NFC top seed. Much to everyone’s dismay and surprise, the Lions were eliminated by the Washington Commanders in the divisional game. As they return after the disappointing end from last season, running back Jahmyr Gibbs is heavily motivated to make the long-distraught fans’ dreams come true.
On the first day of the training camp, Gibbs, who’s called Sonic by the Detroit camp, told reporters that he’s willing to play any position to get the Lions to a Super Bowl victory.
I want to win a Super Bowl. I’ll line up at safety, at nickel.
He added that he is willing to study and understand the specific plays and positioning at different positions. The RB also indicated that there has been a discussion on getting him to utilize more of his pass-catching skills in the coming season. Furthermore, Gibbs also admitted having fun with the new system.

The running back, drafted in 2023, was one of the biggest names last season as he led the league in rushing touchdowns while registering 1,929 scrimmage yards on 302 touches. However, Gibbs, as well as the Detroit Lions’ offense, will be highly watched in the upcoming season as John Morton debuts as the offensive coordinator following Ben Johnson’s departure to the Chicago Bears.
The Detroit Lions look solid as they come in for the training camp
The initial picture from the Detroit 2025 training camp looks pretty solid. The return of the defensive machines Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport, together, is enough of a good news. The former sustained a season-ending injury on Week 6, while the latter played just two games due to injuries. The presence of Hutchinson and Davenport can highly impact the amount of sacks and pressure numbers.

The offensive line order is currently scrambled, and the Lions would be taking most of the camp to figure out and straighten out the starters. The Lions’ head coach, Dan Campbell, reported that his key concern is the O-Line after the session.
My eyes are on the O-Line. We’ve got to sort this O-Line out, it’s an open competition right now and that’s going to be important this camp is we’ve got to find some guys that we know we can count on, they’re going to win the job, they’re going to be guys we can rely on.
Dan Campbell said
Sam LaPorta and Tim Patrick showed immensely on Day 1 and became the standouts of the day. In terms of rookies, Tate Ratledge and Tyleik Williams picked up some major training time. Williams is expected to play several games in the initial half of the season as the Lions don’t expect Alim McNeill to return anytime before November.
Jared Goff had joined the squad for his first season as a dad. The quarterback looked poised as he navigated a shift from the style of the quarterback whisperer, Ben Johnson, to John Morton.
In a recent episode of Get Up, Goff received praise from former Lions QB and Emmy-nominated studio analyst Dan Orlovsky. Orlovsky disparaged co-host Peter Schrager’s doubts about Goff by highlighting his record so far. The host claimed that Goff hasn’t had a losing record since becoming a starter.
