The Philadelphia Eagles traded for cornerback Jaire Alexander with the vision that his experience and leadership would help fill the void left by veteran defensive backs.

The secondary currently consists of mostly younger players. As talented as they are, when it comes to performing in the playoffs, the need for a mature leader is unmatched.

That is what Eagles GM Howie Roseman believed in when he sent a 6th-round pick to acquire Alexander and a 7th-round pick from the Baltimore Ravens.

Despite being heavily courted, the 28-year-old played just 2 games for the latter, as he struggled with his mental and physical state. With the Eagles, the hope was that the new atmosphere would help him rejuvenate his career.

Eagles CB Jaire Alexander has informed the team he is stepping away from the team to focus on getting right physically and mentally, per source. The 28-year-old is contemplating retirement.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini revealed

The senior insider revealed later that even though Jaire Alexander was contemplating retirement, he would take time off from the team to first get his mind and body in the right space.

During that process, he would then think about his future in the sport. As a two-time All-Pro, there is hope among Eagles’ fans that the star corner decides to stay and help their team defend their Super Bowl crown.

Howie Roseman knew risks when trading for Jaire Alexander

Such a decision would ruffle the feathers of any team that had just traded for the said player. However, it seems with Jaire Alexander, Eagles GM Howie Roseman was already aware of what he was getting into.

I remember when he signed in June with Baltimore, thinking what a great signing by them… The relationship we have with Baltimore and being able to have honest conversations and understanding what he went through a little bit in training camp and getting back to health… We felt like the risk was worth the reward with him.

Howie Roseman said after the trade deadline

From this revelation, it seems Roseman knew that the cornerback was going through some things. That is probably why he only sent a 6th-round pick to the Ravens.

He knew there was a chance that the former Green Bay Packers star would call it quits. Therefore, the net reward is still on the positive side, as he took a chance, but still came out with a 7th-round pick.

If Jaire Alexander does return to play, then the payoff of that risk could skyrocket. After all, the Philadelphia native is still considered to be one of the league’s better cornerbacks.

Eagles’ secondary should not have problems until Jaire Alexander returns

Howie Roseman is known to make trades that usually make them better. His outlay is also quite low, proving the point that he is one of the best in the business.

He already assembled a good secondary this offseason, signing Adoree’ Jackson for a meager 1-year, $5 million deal, while also trading for Michael Carter II from the Jets before the trade deadline.

When adding them to the mix, the Eagles’ secondary is still formidable enough. The need for an experienced cornerback will come in when the playoffs come around.

Roseman might be hoping that Jaire Alexander takes enough time to get his mind right and return before the postseason stars. Until then, his current roster is good enough to handle their opponents in the regular season.
