On Saturday, the Toronto Maple Leafs took on the Detroit Red Wings at the Little Caesars Arena. During this game, their captain Auston Matthews found himself in a troublesome situation. In the middle of the match, he lost the blade of one of his skates, leaving him stranded.

Matthews was then helped out by Jake McCabe in a hilarious way. One of the most important equipment in an ice hockey match is the skates. If these things break, it makes it hard for players to walk on the field.

Matthews found himself in this situation during the second period. With the Red Wings a goal up against the Maple Leafs, the visitors tried to get back in the game. During an attack, Matthews lost control and fell on the ice.

The blade of his skate had come off. A major problem was Matthews was that the Maple Leafs’ bench was a bit far away from where he was. McCabe would come to his rescue and help him. The defenseman hilariously dragged his captain towards the bench. It seemed like a tow truck pulling a broken car.

After reaching the blue line, McCabe would push Matthews toward the bench. The forward also made some lunges and tried to slide across the bench. In the end, defenseman Conor Timmins extended a hand to him. Matthews was finally rescued after that. Check out this from a video on X below:

The commentators would take a light-hearted jab at this situation. They dubbed his help from McCabe as an assist. Matthews did return in the game and ended up scoring the leveler for the visitors. However, this was not enough as they ended up losing 4-2.

In the conference, Matthews dubbed this moment as a good learning experience. He even expressed gratitude towards Jake McCabe for helping him out of this troublesome situation.

I was a little bit mixed up. Luckily, Caber was there to get me back to the benchI knew the blade came out. I just didn’t know what to do after that. So, good learning experience probably.

Auston Matthews said as per Luke Fox of Sportsnet

The defeat in this game snapped the two-game winning run of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This is also their third loss in their last five games.

Despite this, the Canadian outfit is still top of the Atlantic Division with an 18-10-2 record. They will look to bounce back against the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.
