The San Francisco 49ers could be without starting kicker Jake Moody for a while. Moody was carted off while trying to tackle an Arizona Cardinals player.

During the second quarter on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, Jake Moody’s field goal was blocked by the Cardinals special teams while the 49ers led 23-10. They picked up the loose ball and attempted a return.

Kickers usually don’t equip themselves with massive gear to absorb heavy challenges. That did not scare the former Michigan standout. He put his body on the line with the Cardinals’ returners rammed into him.

Moody stayed down on the ground, holding his ankle. A few minutes later, the medical team escorted him away to the blue tent for examination. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky replaced the 24-year-old for the first half and even converted a 26-yard field goal. However, the 49ers dropped Wishnowsky for fullback Kyle Juszczyk for the remainder of the game.

Even the Cardinals went through a kicker problem of their own. Veteran kicker Matt Prater, who battled an ankle injury, was replaced by Chad Ryland.

The former Patriots kicker was elevated to active roster duty for the 49ers game, and he scored the game-winning 35-yard field goal with 1:37 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Jake Moody to undergo an MRI and may miss several weeks of football for 49ers

The Cardinals came back from a 10-point deficit to win the game 24-23. Both teams find themselves on equal footing in the NFC West with two wins and three losses.

Contrary to the NFLPA’s request, reporters flooded the 49ers locker room to chat with Jake Moody and ask about his injury. According to FOX 40’s Sean Cunningham, Moody revealed the doctors suspect he has a high ankle sprain.

It rolled underneath me, spun a little farther than it should. Nothing’s broken, thankfully.

Jake Moody said

When asked about the severity of the injury, he replied it required further tests to be certain.

Not sure yet. We are getting an MRI soon, and we will just kind of go from there, I guess.

Jake Moody added

Head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked for further clarity.

They’ll work on that stuff right away. We’ll get them in as fast as possible and pick the best guy we can.

Kyle Shanahan said

Next week, the 49ers play against the Seattle Seahawks. There’s no guarantee that Moody will be available for the fixture. Fans have to wait and see what Shanahan pulls out from his magic hat this time.
