In terms of Canelo Alvarez’s future plans, the last week or so has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. First, there was the news that Alvarez agreed to a fight with Terence Crawford. Then, Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring Magazine nixed that for a fight with Jake Paul. However, the Saudi GEA boxing chief axed that for the original one and a Riyadh Season deal! Now, Paul rips into the boxer for it, thrice in a row.
They say thrice is the charm; hence three times the slam. Jake Paul outwitted grizzly Mike Perry in an eight-round cruiserweight battle, thus making it to the big boy’s league. Paul also starred in his own show when he vs. Mike Tyson headlined MVP’s Netflix-theme fight. But thrice was not it, this time; Canelo Alvarez was nearing a deal to fight him but it did not come to be.
Canelo has signed on to a four-fight deal with the extended Riyadh Season that drew a reaction out of Jake Paul. Later, the Ohio prizefighter tried to bait him by flashing his confidentiality agreement far and wide like a real contract. After the May 3 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas got torpedoed, Paul dissed him for avoiding all things David Benavidez and his innate links to a Mexican celebration card.

He even ripped into Alvarez for immaculately lining up with “Bud,” a former 135-pound boxer. There was a clear promotional push for Cinco De Mayo. But the Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico boxer went the Saudi way. Paul might have other things to say on it, given Alvarez’s first matchup is now official.

Even without the Saudi GEA backing, Jake Paul and his MVP was a boon. Without live gate income or closed circuit windfalls, the PPV package was to go at a $90 buyrate. That meant almost-$100 ($80) million windfall for Canelo Alvarez and his opponent to bag from! However, he draws “Bud” for Riyadh Season, who caps off a meager 75,000 to 100,000 buys.

That’s not where his woes stop though. “Saul” Alvarez will look to box Terence Crawford as an undisputed champion after meeting an IBF titlist in the lineup. Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KO) vacated the IBF title in 2024 to face now IBF super middleweight champion William Scull.
Mandatory defense Scull (23-0, 9 KO) met Vladimir Shishkin for the vacant title and captured it. It thus paved the way for a more lucrative Canelo Alvarez versus Edgar Berlanga scrap. Now, instead of facing gimmicky Jake Paul, Alvarez goes through the grinder! Scull is a damn sight more legit stiff test for Alvarez as an opponent.
Even more than Jermall Carlo or Bruno Surace, the reported front-runners. Or any other dangerous next-gen super middleweights for that matter. He does have the Crawford fight and can’t afford much flashy swinging rather than a skills test.

🥊 The Ring has learned of the following plan:
🇸🇦 Fight in Riyadh in May
🇺🇸 Big fight in Las Vegas… pic.twitter.com/9OUxdqxdLg
The legend Saul Alvarez Canelo will fight William Scull in undisputed fight in Riyadh on the 3rd of May … if he win the fight in September will be undisputed again 🔥🥊

So legit skills test and unification against a rounded boxer is what he gets. Slow-running but long-lasting aftermath. The Paul fight was insignificant as a skills test. But that meant he wasn’t risking anything of gravitas and was a bigger prop to win it. Now, it’s actual professional boxing.
