Leave it to ‘Problem Child’ Jake Paul to be pro boxing’s problem child, and he’ll deliver. Paul and his crossover boxing culture have often come under fire, for irking boxing purists as non-mainstream. His recent beatdown of boxing icon Mike Tyson also didn’t help. To make it worse, he is seemingly up for a sweet potential pay-per-view fight vs. IBF, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez!

Now, it could just be high-end speculation at this point. Jake Paul is infamous for stirring the doubt pot despite his “make it happen” crossover wizardry. Take his ‘Paul American’ show, streaming on HBO Max, for example. It looked like he would fight Logan Paul, who has boxed for the Misfits & DAZN: X Series 10 setup. But then, he also does the impossible and Canelo Alvarez would count as one.

Before this, Paul ran through Mike Perry in an eight-round cruiserweight battle. Then, Paul vs. Tyson headlined MVP’s Netflix boxing event from the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T for an immobile beatdown. It’s an order of words boxing purists never thought possible. He beat Mike Tyson, 58, all the way to a decision (80-72, 79-73, 79-73). Alvarez is a different case — but still a hard pairing to swallow.

How the hydration would work and under what sanction is not clear yet. Before this, Paul did go as a lifelong cruiserweight; Whereas Alvarez has held multiple world championships in four weight classes, from light middleweight to light heavyweight.

The iconic Mexican boxer has also held lineal titles in two of those. Another thing is that a Terence Crawford megafight is now official, and the fallout might hinder it. However, fans are preemptively running amok with this news.

Fight fans react to possible Jake Paul vs. Canelo Alvarez debacle

Leave Oleksandr Usyk; leave viral boxers like Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia or even undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beteriev. Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) vs. “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) was the go-to big fight. Despite some pullbacks, Saudi GEA chief and his boxing administration are now up to make this the pound-for-pound money fight.

According to the ESPN report, Crawford has agreed to move up two divisions to fight in September. There will be no catchweight or rehydration clause and Allegiant Stadium is seemingly a good spot for it. But the Mexican 168lber and YouTuber turned-boxer Jake Paul reportedly have an agreement to fight in May. Here are the top reactions to that monkey wrench in all things mainstream boxing:

Fans are in disbelief or denial over this one. Canelo vs. Jake Paul would be a proper odd one, through and through. Even combat sports analyst/MMA columnist for @MorningKombat Luke Thomas wrote on X (@lthomasnews) that it’ll be a “Sad news if true.”

Canelo doesn’t do exhibitions. But then again, Canelo vs. Paul is likely to bring in more PPV buys than the Mexican star’s September fight. Crawford’s last outing under the Saudi GEA did a measly 75,000 to 100,000 buy rate! He also told TMZ Sports that he’d do it if the money is right.

Despite saying otherwise, fans might veer to this one just for the oddity of it; kind of like with Mike Tyson. Susbequently, with Paul the pay might just be that large enough. However, it’s a far cry from actual mainstream boxing with recently turned-pro boxer Paul challenging such a big name.
