Jakub Mensik‘s dream of lifting his first ATP title came true on Sunday (March 30). He came out on top of Novak Djokovic 7-6(4),7-6(4) to win the Miami Open, becoming only the fourth man to win his first tour-level title in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Mensik denied Djokovic his 100th ATP trophy as the Serb once again failed to end his trophy drought, having last won an official title at the 2024 Paris Olympics, while his last tour-level singles title came in the 2023 ATP Finals.
Djokovic is Mensik’s idol and so the latter sure was on cloud nine after his win. What impressed Mensik about Djokovic the most was his champion’s mentality.
To be honest, it just shows how incredible of a person he is. Even if he is winning or losing, he had a champion’s mentality, which is saying that he is really one of the best athletes of all time in all of the sports and showing off the court and on the court how he is acting, it’s just amazing.
Jakub Mensik told Tennis Channel
Mensik is now the first player in men’s tennis to win a Masters 1000 trophy from the Czech Republic after Tomas Berdych, who had lifted the 2005 Paris Masters. Djokovic, on the other hand, was chasing his 41st Masters 1000 trophy.
Of course, to hear those nice things after all my career, I am just in the beginning but I am already playing for 14 years. So 14 years of trying and the work and dreaming to play these big tournaments and after all, your teacher is saying those kind words, it is just showing that I am on a good path.
Jakub Mensik added
Mensik also talked about the “crazy” story of how he was about to withdraw from the tournament because he couldn’t walk or run properly. But as the referee was having lunch, he decided to visit the ATP physio, whose treatment did the “miracle“.
Brad Gilbert lauds Jakub Mensik for his Miami Open win
Jakub Mensik became the second youngest man to win the Miami Open after World No.3 Carlos Alcaraz, who was crowned as champion at the age of 18 in 2022. Mensik is 14-6 on the season and has moved 30 places up to occupy a career-high 24th position in the ATP rankings table. Following the final, Coco Gauff‘s former coach, Brad Gilbert, was all praise for the teenager.

Mensik will now shift his focus to the clay swing. The first Masters 1000 event on the red dirt in the Monte Carlo Masters, which is scheduled to start on April 5. He didn’t have decent campaigns in the clay-court tournaments last year as he made early exits at the Madrid Open, and Italian Open, and withdrew from the French Open.
Jakub Mensik becomes the first player to win seven tie-breaks before winning an ATP Masters 1000 title
Jakub Mensik entered the Miami tournament as a World No.54 player. His win made him the lower-ranked man to claim the Miami Open. Throughout the tournament, Mensik hit 111 aces, 14 of which he smashed against Novak Djokovic.

He played seven tie-breaks en route to the win, winning all; and this made him the first player in the history of the Masters 1000 event to achieve this feat. Mensik is also the second player to win seven tie-breaks en route to an ATP title following John Isner at the 2013 Atlanta Open.
Mensik played the first tie-break against 2025 Indian Wells champion Jack Draper. The rest of the three were against Arthur Fils, Taylor Fritz, and Djokovic.
