Things have not been going well for Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks since the turn of the year. They began 2026 with a loss to the Atlanta Hawks and went on to lose two more games, extending their losing streak to four games. A win against the Los Angeles Clippers put an end to their losing streak but they suffered a 112-107 loss to the Phoenix Suns at the Mortgage Matchup Center on Friday night.

After their fourth loss in five games, the New York Knicks have dropped to third in the Eastern Conference standings with a 24-14 record and have suffered their tenth loss in 17 games on the road, highlighting their struggles away from home.

Meanwhile, the Suns have continued to surprise everyone with their performances this year and sit at seventh in the Western Conference standings with a 23-15 record and just 0.5 games behind sixth-place Houston Rockets.

The Knicks lifted the 2025 NBA Cup this season, which was the franchise’s first title in 52 years since lifting the NBA Championship back in 1973. While the NBA Cup may not be regarded in the same way as the NBA Championship, it was a sign that the club is headed in the right direction and has a good chance of making it out of a wide-open Eastern Conference.

2025 NBA Cup MVP Jalen Brunson has been one of the best players in the league this season and stands with an outside chance of winning the league MVP award. Brunson, who is a huge fan favorite in the city of New Yorkis currently averaging 29 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in 35 appearances this season.

Talking about their poor run of form, Brunson was critical of his team on the Rooomates Show podcast with Josh Hart and Matt Hillman.

Just keep it a buck, we a**. I’ma going to keep it real. We look god awful. The worst part about it is it’s all correctibile stuffs, it’s not like we are bad. I think that’s what makes it more frustrating. I know we are a lot better than we have been showing.

The loss to the Suns was their first game of a four-game road trip, and their away form has not been very promising this season. The Knicks will look to bounce back against the Portland Trail Blazers, who are riding on some good form at the moment.

New York Knicks are missing Josh Hart

Knicks’ forward Josh Hart has missed the last eight games due to an ankle injury. In his absence, the club has gone 3-5. Hart may not be the best or the second-best player in the team, but he is the glue of the team. His injury has left a sizeable hole in the lineup, and it is hard to ignore Hart’s value.

Till his injury, the 30-year-old was averaging 12.8 points, eight rebounds and 5.1 assists. Before his injury, the Knicks looked like they would overtake the Detroit Pistons and march towards the first seed in the East, but find themselves at third right now after being overtaken by the Boston Celtics. Hart has he is a solid two-way player contributing on both sides of the floor.

When Brunson is on the bench, it is Hart who takes up the ball-handling responsibilities. He has shown he is a good passer and playmaker of the ball as well. The good news for Knicks fans is Hart has begun light court work and is expected to be back soon. Without him, this Knicks team are not championship contenders.

Devin Booker on his leadership

Following the departures of Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, it was expected that Devin Booker may be traded, and the Suns may look to rebuild from scratch. However, the 13th pick in the 2015 BA draft stayed and signed a contract extension through 2030, staying loyal to the franchise.

Dillon Brooks, who was acquired in the Durant trade, has been one of the best two-way players this season and has grabbed a lot of the spotlight, but their best player and primary scorer, Booker, has gone under the radar for his performances.

After the win, Booker spoke about his leadership in the post-match press conference.

I always communicate. I might come off a quiet and reserved around you guys. I try to say the right thing every time, but it’s not that way in the huddle and I think everybody that has played with me, and I’ve had a lot of teammates, understand that. What we do, we keep in-house, and I knows there’s times encourage and there are times to lead.

There weren’t many hopes on the Suns, as many predicted that they would end up being a lottery team in a stacked Western Conference, but they have been one of the biggest surprises this season. Not only have they stayed competitive against the top teams, but they also stand with a good chance to secure a direct playoff qualification.
