Jalen Brunson taking $113 million pay cut to help New York Knicks win NBA title has fans trolling other NBA superstars
In today’s generation, everybody wants to take the best deals out there. The same goes for NBA superstars, who have been setting record after record with their massive deals. But some want to take a slightly lesser deal to help the team win an NBA title. But Jalen Brunson‘s latest extension with the New York Knicks has taken the word ‘pay cut’ to another level.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the All-Star had agreed to a 4-year, $156.5 million extension. This extension might seem like an average deal considering what he has done for the New York Knicks. But Wojnarowski added that it was “$113M less guaranteed than he’s eligible to receive in one year.”
That is a lot of money to leave on the table. All for the cause of helping his team win their first NBA title in more than half a century.
It gives major roster and cap flexibility for the Knicks. They can make moves to improve their roster in two scenarios. One is to avoid the lack of players they had towards the end of the season due to injuries. The second is to help them make small moves that can galvanize the team down the stretch. Had Jalen Brunson taken the full amount he was eligible for next year, it could have throttled their NBA title goals.
As they now have a full-blown squad with the arrival of Mikal Bridges and the recent extension for OG Anunoby. Taking that max would have forced the Knicks to move one of the core players out, sooner or later, denying them that flexibility.
Fans troll other superstars in wake of Jalen Brunson’s pay cut
Flexibility is one of the major needs for any team in their quest for an NBA title. Most teams are hamstrung with contracts, which become difficult to offload even if they are not serving the team’s purpose. Just ask the Chicago Bulls.
Fans have nothing but appreciation for Jalen Brunson. After all, his goal is clear. He wants to win alongside his teammates. Not take what he wants and force others out, eventually.
Many on the internet took shots at other superstars for only looking out for themselves. They know that making sacrifices ensures team victory. Check out some of those comments below;
Now, with most contracts set, it is possible that other stars will face the brunt of fans when their teams do not end up winning the NBA title. On top of that, if Brunson and his teammates win the title for the New York Knicks, it could change the landscape of the NBA.
