Ever since Jalen Brunson joined the New York Knicks, they have become a playoff regular. Then, the franchise decided to add some additional pieces to turn the team into a potential championship-contender.

Last season, they tried and managed to reach the Eastern Conference Finals. However, they could not keep up with the Tyrese Haliburton-led Indiana Pacers and ended their season with a 2-4 series loss.

In the offseason, after some Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors, the Knicks dived into the free agency market to land some impactful pieces so that new head coach Mike Brown could turn them into champions.

Their run until the end of last year had passionate New Yorkers sporting wide smiles on their faces. But since the turn of the New Year, their smiles have turned into frowns after having lost eight of their last ten games.

Those frowns grew during their game against the Dallas Mavericks after they trailed by 28 points at halftime. While talking about the team and their struggles in their halftime show, NBC played a clip of the Knicks during a timeout with seven minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

The clip shows Jalen Brunson yelling at his teammates as they huddle around him. The guard was animated and used hand gestures to express his frustrations.

Carmelo Anthony believes Jalen Brunson and Knicks look lost

During halftime, many ardent New York Knicks fans were upset with how their team was playing. Even the likes of Hollywood director Spike Lee were left stunned by how bad his team played against an injury-riddled and inconsistent Dallas Mavericks.

This team they have to figure out what they want to do from an identity standpoint. And who they want to be, because they don’t know who they want to be, right now.

Carmelo Anthony said on NBC’s halftime show

His co-panelist, Tracy McGrady, added that there is visible frustration in the team. Whether it was between players, or with the coaches, or with the top brass, whatever it is, the Hall of Famer believes the Knicks need to iron it out.

He pointed out that if this were a team searching for its identity, then it could be understandable. But most of this roster went to the Conference Finals last year. That alone raises the question as to what is wrong with the Knicks.

For essentially the same roster to lose this many games in such a short span, something is amiss. Before their losses start to become a problem for their playoff hopes, McGrady hopes they figure it out.

Jalen Brunson needs his teammates to ‘soul search’ now

The New York Knicks tried their best to recover from that awful first-half performance, but only managed to reduce the deficit to 17 points. After the loss, the SNY Knicks asked Jalen Brunson how they would go about Josh Hart‘s suggestion of ‘soul searching.’

Should’ve started a couple of weeks ago, but we gotta start tomorrow. We’ve got to figure this out fast.

Jalen Brunson replied

The 29-year-old’s words indicate he wants to do whatever it takes to get his team back to where they should be, hunting down the conference-leading Detroit Pistons.

This loss against the Mavericks was their fourth straight, sending alarm bells ringing across the organization. After all, they are losing ground in their effort to rise to the top of the conference.

After the way they ended 2025, there was hope among New Yorkers that their Knicks would challenge the Pistons for Eastern Conference supremacy.

Now it seems the team needs to forget about catching those at the top and focus on how to win easy games. If they start losing steam, they could lose momentum ahead of the playoffs.
