Jalen Hurts’ regression continued on Monday Night Football. Hurts not only threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball twice in the same play but also recorded the lowest quarterback rating of his NFL career.

Through four quarters and the first overtime, Hurts logged a 31.3 QBR. According to research from Bleacher Report, Hurts’ QBR would be higher (39.6) if he had just spiked the ball on every play.

While enraged fans may blame the combination of head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo for such a dip in form, the reality is that an awful game like this was on the cards for a long time.

The Week 11 game against the Detroit Lions is a great example of Hurts’ struggle. Of course, the Eagles won, but it was due to the heroics of the defense. Hurts just had 135 yards on 12 completions (50%) and 1 score on the ground.

Unlike the Lions, the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears took advantage of the turmoil. With defeat in Week 14, the Eagles went from an 8-2 team to 8-5 within 15 days and dropped to third in the NFC playoff seeding.

Hurts’ form has quickly become a big concern. In the four losses since the bye week ended, Hurts has a 57.5% pass completion rate (24th in the NFL), 6.4 yards per throw (22nd), 4 passing touchdowns (22nd), 5 interceptions (tied at 4th most), a passer rating of 72.4 (29th), and has turned the ball over 8 times (5 interceptions and 3 fumbles).

Jalen Hurts’ performance against the Chargers leaves the football world divided

Hurts is among the best quarterbacks in football. Some would even consider the ex-Sooner the two best quarterbacks alongside Patrick Mahomes. Hurts won the last two contests against Mahomes and the Chiefs, including a memorable victory in Super Bowl 59.

These two are even fighting to see who can put up worse numbers. A day before Hurts’ awful outing, Mahomes statistically had his worst game in a Chiefs shirt (excluding the rookie season). Hence, the Chiefs are on the verge of missing out on playing January football for the first time since Mahomes became QB1.

The Eagles are not in the same boat just yet. However, they aren’t out of the woods either. A couple of losses in the remaining games could drag them into fighting for a wildcard spot. Defeating the Chargers would have eased the tension a little bit, but Hurts failed to meet expectations.

If you were going to tell me going into last night that somebody was going to throw four interceptions, I would have thought it’d probably be the guy with only one hand.

Dan Graziano said on the recent segment of ESPN’s Get Up

Former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, a staunch believer in Hurts, criticized the Super Bowl MVP.

Did he play badly? Yes. Did he play horribly? Hell yeah, but he ain’t no four-pick-type quarterback. He had a bad game. A lot of quarterbacks have that.

Graziano’s colleague and former NFL defensive lineman, Chris Canty, on the other hand, backed the Eagles to win the upcoming games and become NFC champions.

The Philadelphia Eagles are going to win the NFC East, they are. When you look at the remaining schedule, they’re going to cruise to 11 wins.

Chris Canty said on First Take

For the Eagles to win the NFC two years in a row, Sirianni needs to get the offense firing again, and it all starts with Hurts. Beating the Las Vegas Raiders could be the perfect spark for a turnaround. Hurts faces a huge challenge, but he certainly has all the tools to pull the Eagles out of this tough spot.
