Jalen Hurts not being named in NFC’s top 5 quarterback list is a big robbery, according to James Jones

Jalen Hurts struggled with a stale and predictable Eagles offense last season.

Jalen Hurts had a brilliant season in 2023 which took the Philadelphia Eagles all the way to the Super Bowl. Last season though was a downer. Despite winning 8 of their first 9 games, many analysts pointed out obvious problems with their offense. Those problems showed their ugly side when the Eagles lost 5 of their last 8 games. That was taken into consideration with the latest NFC QB rankings.

But James Jones had something to say about that. He was on Speak on FS1 when they were discussing these QB rankings. He expanded his thoughts on Jalen Hurts‘ position.

I think it’s highway robbery with Jalen Hurts not being on the list. This is an All-Pro quarterback that has been to a Super Bowl and helped his team get to a Super Bowl. I think they turned the tape on, and they said at the quarterback spot, throwing this football, getting this ball out of their hands, making everybody around them better, these are the 5 quarterbacks that have been doing that. That's what I think this list is saying.
James Jones said

James Jones suggested they looked at Hurts’ play in the old-fashioned way of ranking quarterbacks, instead of seeing what he can do with the ball in his hands as a team. This indirectly implies that those who ranked Hurts are looking at what history tells them about Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks. That is, they are not of the dual threat type. Rather, they are more of the type that resembles a pocket passer.

As no true dual-threat quarterback has won a Super Bowl, that history reference might suggest that Jalen Hurts might not be equipped to beat the other quarterbacks higher up the list. Hurts has a chance to change that narrative.

Jalen Hurts has an elite Eagles team to contend for the Super Bowl

That chance has come around after the Philadelphia Eagles decided to fix the wrongs of this past season. Their offense had become stale and predictable, and their defense was struggling. This season, the additions to the roster have been focused on improving the team in every way.

If Jalen Hurts can take advantage of the fact that he had a full off-season of rest and a new set of plays to learn, he could bounce back this season. He has the chance to lead the Eagles’ offense and take a shot at another Super Bowl. Even if it means he has to scramble for 700+ yards again this season. All that matters at the end is a win.

Jalen Hurts has the chance to change the narrative that dual-threat quarterbacks such as himself can hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy just like pocket passers have done throughout the history of the NFL. Then probably the rankings will start taking that into account.
