Jalen Hurts, Not Lamar Jackson or Cam Newton, Is the Best Dual-Threat Quarterback of All Time?
Jalen Hurts was drafted late by the Philadelphia Eagles in the famous 2020 NFL Draft after standout performances at Alabama and Oklahoma.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts, has a ring and a Super Bowl MVP to his name. However, the quarterback rankings by many critics put Hurts below the likes of Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson. Recently, he was named the 19th best player in the league by the NFL, heading into a new season.
Jalen Hurts, who led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl win since 2017, has numerous allies on the analyst side sticking up for him. A month ago, FS1 sportscaster Emmanuel Acho blasted the ESPN poll that ranked Hurts ninth in the quarterback tier rankings. Similarly, former Dallas Cowboys player Dez Bryant also ripped into Cam Newton for not naming Hurts among his top quarterbacks.
Jason McIntyre is the latest addition to the list. The FS1 host and Colin Cowherd’s co-host on the latter’s The Herd podcast made a defining claim. He acknowledged the quarterback as the best dual-threat option of all-time, ahead of Jackson, Cam Newton, and even Michael Vick.
He’s, I think, the best dual-threat quarterback the league has ever seen.

McIntyre’s argument was based on Jalen Hurts’ consistent results in the last four seasons. He argued that Hurts has consistently produced at least 15 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in four of the past seasons. However, there’s a slight problem with McIntyre’s perspective.
Sure, his statement is right, but he overlooked the fact that the Philadelphia Eagles’ famous Tush Push was the leading cause of many of these touchdowns. In fact, 33 of his 55 career rushing scores have come from utilizing Tush Push. Jalen Hurts deserves the credit, but his rushing scores aren’t necessarily the same as the open-field runs that defined dual-threat quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton, or Michael Vick.
The Hurts method is more of him being a runner, while Jackson, Vick, and more recently, Jayden Daniels consistently create scoring opportunities out of the trenches.
Much of his production is situational and system-driven, amplified by the Eagles’ dominant offensive line and unique play design. Hurts is a high-level quarterback with a distinctive skill set, but using touchdown totals alone to compare him to other dual-threat quarterbacks is quite a skewed view of seeing things.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ QB room beyond Jalen Hurts is not so good
Jalen Hurts is the Philly side’s main and singular hope heading into the new season. The preseason exposed the flaws of their roster, devoid of any depth at the quarterback position. Rookie sixth-round pick Kyle McCord and trade addition Dorian Thompson-Robinson combined for a very underwhelming preseason.

It was really worse; it forced general manager Howie Roseman to intervene. Their play was less about promise and more about panic. The manager later traded in Sam Howell, who, alongside Kenny Pickett, became the rare quarterbacks who have been traded to four new teams in the span of four years.
Roseman dismissed any reason that he had lost trust in the waived quarterbacks.
Felt like Sam had a lot of value for our team right now. That doesn’t say we don’t like our young quarterbacks who are here, that we don’t have great hope and promise for those guys… But I felt like it was the right thing to do here for the short-term, to make this trade and bring in Sam.
Roseman said on Tuesday after the Eagles made their 53-man roster official
Roseman pulled the trigger on a trade for Sam Howell, sending late-round draft capital to Minnesota. Howell, who has 18 NFL starts under his belt, offered a level of experience and stability the reserves sorely lacked. It was less of a luxury move and more of a necessary correction to a glaring flaw.
