Today was the home opener for the Philadelphia Eagles 2024 NFL season. In tonight’s game against an Atlanta Falcons team troubled with sloppy quarterback play, they were widely favored to win. The bookmaker odds gave the Falcons a less than 1% chance to win it with 2 minutes remaining in the game. But Kirk Cousins and later Jalen Hurts threw those odds into the air, leaving many fuming.
First, it was Kirk Cousins who played way better than he did in his first game in a Falcons jersey. But in that last drive that started at 1:39, it was the veteran who led his team to a touchdown.
After the ensuing field goal, suddenly the Eagles looked like a team set to lose. Jalen Hurts started the drive with a brilliant throw to TE Dallas Goedert. On the next snap, under pressure from linebacker Kaden Elliss threw it straight into the hands of Falcons safety Jessie Bates.
Even if the pressure of a sack was on his head, a throw out of bounds could have saved the drive with 21 seconds still to go. All the Philadelphia Eagles needed was 15 yards to set up Jake Elliott for a field goal. This throw did not support that need as Hurts threw it into what double coverage over DeVonta Smith.
The Atlanta Falcons showed desire and grit in winning this game by a point. The Eagles, on the other hand, have a lot to think about as their next game is against the high-flying New Orleans Saints. With their unproductive offense and defense, the worrying signs of last season are showing up again.
Fans take their fury out on Jalen Hurts
Eagles fans know all too well that any chance their team had of winning was lost due to the hero ball throw Jalen Hurts tried. They know all too well that their starting quarterback should have showed composure and did what was best for the team. Instead, the team are on the backfoot in a league that is throwing up surprises every game. There is absolutely no room for error.
Fans took to social media to call out the 5th year veteran. He performed underwhelmingly along with that interception. Check out some of those comments below;
If anything, Jalen Hurts needs to get back to his All-Pro playing levels again.
Else it will not help this Eagles team move forward and play with confidence. He has to be that leader to drive them back to a Super Bowl.
