Jamal Thiare‘s match-winner against Toronto FC is as sneaky as it gets in professional football. The 31-year-old left the footballing community at a loss for words as he grabbed a late winner for his side in a nervy encounter in the MLS. Atlanta had only won three of their last 10 games and were desperately in need of a win in their next game.

Toronto on the other hand have been on quite the winless streak, having failed to win a single game in their last seven outings. However, despite their best efforts, Jamal Thiare‘s unbelievable goal in the final minute of the game broke Toronto hearts. In an unthinkable display of presence of mind, Thiare sneakily went behind Luka Gavran as the goalkeeper picked up the ball from an Atlanta attack.

However, the player continued to stand behind Gavran, waiting for the right moment to strike. Thiare swiftly nicked the ball off of the keeper just as he placed the ball on the ground to play it out to his teammates.

He swiftly rounded the keeper and passed the ball into an empty net as the crowd erupted in celebration. Following the win, Atlanta are currently 19th in the MLS, while opponents Toronto are 18th.

‘Controversial’ goal hands Atlanta a win over Toronto

Fans got to work on social media as Atlanta forward Jamal Thiare scored a controversial goal to hand his side a late win over Toronto. On a night when Jordi Alba scored an unbelievable volley against Nashville SC, Thiare’s goal grabbed all the headlines. Even though Thiare did well to hide behind the opposition keeper unnoticed, fans spotted a crucial detail which should have been the reason for the goal to be disallowed. Snapshots from the build-up to the match-winner show Thiare stepping out of bounds behind the opposition’s goal.

The No. 29 is stepping out of the pitch in order to hide from the opposition keeper’s view. However, it is understood that players are not supposed to do so unless the match official gives them permission! A fan claimed that players do not step outside the pitch even when they go near the touchline to have a drink.

However, opposition fans argued that the law is rarely enforced and that Thiare gained no real advantage by going out of bounds. Their late defeat, coupled with a goal disallowed by VAR gave enough reason for Toronto supporters to feel that they were wrongly done against Atlanta. Federico Bernardeschi‘s brilliant goal, however, gave little relief to the home side. His brilliant left-footed strike came as consolation for a frustrated home crowd. Prior to Lionel Messi’s arrival, the Italian was one of the highest-paid players in the MLS.
