Ja’Marr Chase issued an apology a week after spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers DB Jalen Ramsey. The NFL had deemed Chase’s transgression a direct violation of the league’s code of conduct and suspended the wideout for one game.

Chase appealed for a review in the bench led by former Packers WR Jordy Nelson. However, the bench upheld the NFL’s decision. It meant that Chase could not play in the Week 12 game against the New England Patriots.

The punishment did not end with the suspension. Chase also received a monetary fine worth $14,491.

The Bengals were already shorthanded on offense, and Chase’s suspension created added pressure. Even though it was a home game, the Patriots left the jungle with a 23-20 victory.

One day after the defeat, Chase posted a long apology letter on Instagram. Chase wrote,

What I did was wrong… The circumstances don’t matter. My passion for the game is no excuse. There’s zero place in our sport—or life—for that level of disrespect.

Chase apologized to the entire Steelers organization, his coaches, teammates, the Bengals’ organization, and his fans while vowing that he “won’t let it happen again.”

I do not take anyone who wears my jersey for granted… I do not take my position as a role model lightly. As someone who strives to lead with character and authenticity, I should have taken immediate accountability for what happened,.

The 25-year-old promised to make amends for his behavior from now on.

I am committed to earning back your respect—not just with words, but with my actions, day after day, on and off the field.

Chase wasn’t the only one ordered to pay a fine. The NFL received footage containing proof that Ramsey punched the Bengals’ All-Pro wideout in retaliation for the ‘spitgate’ incident. They fined the Super Bowl-winning corner $14,491.

Ja’Marr Chase and Jalen Ramsey don’t like each other

The duel between Ramsey and Chase was among the highly anticipated matchups since Ramsey moved to the AFC North in the summer. It didn’t disappoint when these two went head-to-head in week 7.

Chase won the first bout by a massive margin. While receiving from Joe Flacco, Chase recorded 16 completions on 23 targets for 161 yards and 1 touchdown in Week 7. The Bengals won the game by two points.

Ramsey exacted his revenge in Week 11. Chase only caught 3 passes all game from 10 targets for 30 yards.

The following week, Ramsey notched 9 tackles, but the Steelers fell to the Bears in Chicago, a city where they haven’t claimed a win since 1995. Ramsey’s tally increased to 56 total tackles, 2 sacks, 6 pass deflections, and 2 interceptions.

The loss left the Steelers with a 6-5 record, level with the Baltimore Ravens at the top of the North. Next week, they host the Buffalo Bills at Acrisure Stadium.

As for the Bengals, they are awaiting the return of Joe Burrow. There’s a big chance that he might start against the Ravens.

Chase will also return for the game. In 8 previous meetings, Chase racked up 58 catches for 962 yards and scored 8 touchdowns. He’s on pace for another 1000-yard campaign. Currently, his stat sheet contains 79 receptions, 861 yards, and 5 touchdowns from 10 games.
