With their season over, Ja’Marr Chase and his Cincinnati Bengals knew there was only going to be one storyline out of their final game against the Cleveland Browns, which included a certain Myles Garrett.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had done a good job of stopping the pass rusher from touching Aaron Rodgers in their Week 17 matchup in front of Browns fans. That would have been a fitting setting, as Garrett would have sacked a surefire future Hall of Famer, much like his supposed mentor, Brett Favre, did when it was Michael Strahan‘s turn.

Then, in the fourth-quarter of their Week 18 game against the Bengals, they aligned single coverage on Myles Garrett, which allowed the superstar to bend around left tackle Orlando Brown to bring Joe Burrow down easily.

The Browns’ star folded his hands in gratitude after what he had achieved, but his teammates were not content and went over to celebrate with him. Soon, the bench players came over, bringing the game to a halt as officials waited for the celebrations to pass.

There’s five minutes left in our season, we’re playing for our lives here… In a critical moment like that… We didn’t sub, we were trying to be on the ball and go with tempo, just held the ball, and we couldn’t do anything.

Zac Taylor told reporters

The Bengals’ head coach was frustrated as the officials allowed the Browns to celebrate even though there was enough time for them to finish the season with a win. He felt those celebrations impacted their tempo.

Ja’Marr Chase slams officials for allowing Browns to celebrate Myles Garrett’s sack record

Zac Taylor might not be wrong about his team losing their rhythm, as when Myles Garrett set the new NFL single-season sack record, QB Joe Burrow was marching his team down the field. The Bengals believe the celebration stopped their momentum, which led them to end the drive with a punt. Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was also vocal about the supposedly unwanted incident.

I never knew you could let the whole team get on the field. That’s like me catching the 10th pass and the whole team running on the field. We’re gonna get flagged. Congrats to him and everything, but you’ve got to call a flag on that play. We’re trying to hurry up, too.

Ja’Marr Chase said

The star wideout felt the officials did not do their part to penalize the Browns after the celebration. He also echoed his head coach’s opinion that the events stopped their drive.

He then sarcastically mentioned that he wished the officials would do something similar when it is his turn to set a record or something. Ja’Marr Chase did not appreciate how those celebrations stopped them from finishing the season with a win.

Had the game continued, or they would have received a favorable penalty, the Bengals could have continued their momentum, and possibly scored a field goal at least.

Those three points would have been enough to give them a win to end a trying season. Instead, the momentum swung towards the Browns even though their next drive ended in a punt, and the Bengals took the opportunity to score a touchdown.

On the final drive, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, whom the Bengals harassed all game long, did enough to place his team in a situation to score the winning field goal.
