James Cook has only one objective in his mind after signing a contract extension with the Buffalo Bills, and that is to win the Super Bowl. It’s a tough task considering the Bills play in the loaded AFC, but Cook is confident in his team’s capabilities to stand at the top when the season ends.
Cook was in a cheery mood despite not taking a single rep and witnessing the Bills giving up 38 points to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday. FOX Sports caught up with the 25-year-old to ask about his goal following a four-year, $48 million contract extension.
Initially, Cook couldn’t hear the reporter’s question because of the stadium noise. After she repeated the question, Cook replied,
It means a lot, just to be here in Buffalo, and I’ll stay another four years and hopefully bring a Super Bowl back to Buffalo. The contract extension always feels good. It’s a blessing.
Cook had to fight for the extension, as the Bills did not seem too keen to entertain his $20 million a year demand. He announced a holdout from attending the OTAs and minicamp. When reporters confronted General Manager Brandon Beane for an update on the situation, he clarified that Cook was working out by himself.
[James’] down there training in South Florida. He’s working. First of all, he’s competitive. And sure, everyone wants to get paid, and he knows he’s got to still show he’s James Cook—the guy we saw—if he wants to get that payday. Either from us or someone else. That’s any player that doesn’t currently have their contract extensions yet.

Says players know he’ll have an open dialogue about contract talks, and they’ll let the business handle itself.

Cook continued his holdout even after attending the Bills camp. Beane, in a later interview, expressed disappointment about the entire situation. He did not predict it would drag on deep into the camp.
I wish we weren’t here… It’s not something we want.
Beane said
Beane: "there's been constant communication between the two sides….at the end of the day I wish we weren't here. This is my ninth season and have never had a player miss practice due too a contract, so it's disappointing for me"

Eventually, the stalemate between Cook and the Bills ended on August 13. He signed a $30 million guaranteed contract extension that will keep him in Buffalo until the end of the 2028 season. Even though the salary package is less than $20 million, Cook’s $11.5 million AAV is the joint seventh-highest in the NFL.
Just knowing that it’s gonna get done. Being a good teammate and being with my teammates deal-wise… Getting the deal done and just not letting it be a distraction.

Cook, a Georgia alumnus, was drafted in the second round by the Bills. Since then, he has played in 49 games for the AFC East club, posting 533 carries for 2638 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and 20 touchdowns. Last year, Cook led the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns.
Who are the other running backs on the Bills team besides James Cook?
Cook may be the undisputed number one running back on the Bills roster, but there are a few capable players ready to step in when required, most notably Ray Davis.

Davis, a fourth-round pick from Kentucky, made waves in his rookie season for the Bills. As the understudy to Cook, Davis racked up 113 rushes for 442 yards and 3 touchdowns.
The Bills also signed undrafted free agent RB Frank Gore Jr. The name will sound familiar because he’s the son of legendary 49ers running back Frank Gore.

Both Davis and Gore Jr. had meaningful minutes in the Bills’ preseason defeats to the Giants and the Bears. They still have one more game to improve their stock when the Bills travel to Florida to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their preseason finale.
