At present, Brandon Aiyuk’s contract situation with the San Francisco 49ers has become one of the biggest topics of discussion. Although his teammates have offered a hand of support, it’s certainly a frustrating situation for the star receiver, especially after he contributed more than the No. 1 receiver in the team’s run for the grand Super Bowl.
While many believe Aiyuk is potentially going to earn a record-breaking deal, James Jones expressed uncertainty about whether the receiver will actually get an extension. During his recent appearance on Fox Sports’ Speak, Jones compared Aiyuk’s contract situation with the Dallas Cowboys’ WR CeeDee Lamb.
He claimed while the latter certainly deserves a lucrative extension after the Pro Bowl-level season he recorded last year, the former does not stand at the same level.
I don’t expect him to sign an extension because I don’t think the Niners have the money for it. I don't think he's in CeeDee Lamb's ballpark because we haven't seen it yet. It’s no disrespect to Brandon Aiyuk but… we have not seen him get all the attention and treated like a true No. 1 receiver. So I can’t sit here and say he’s gonna put up CeeDee Lamb’s numbers.James Jones said
He further clarified that he isn’t saying the Aiyuk cannot achieve that level of success or fame, but as of now, no one has seen with the level of hype a threatening No. 1 receiver gets such as Lamb and highest-paid non-quarterback Justin Jefferson gets.
Brandon Aiyuk’s contract dispute could distract 49ers
This isn’t the first time that Jones has addressed Aiyuk’s contract situation as just last week, during his appearance on Speak show, he discussed how the delay in trade options for Aiyuk may impact the Niners. He claimed that if Aiyuk didn’t sign an extension, it would be a major distraction for the team.

He argued that this would not only affect Aiyuk’s performance but would affect the whole team’s morale. To back his argument, Jones shared his own experience with the contract negotiation, saying it made him bitter in the locker room and made it hard for him to keep up his energy like before.
