“He’s bigger than them by the way”- Fans express outrage as Lazio director claims Copa America POTT James Rodriguez isn’t good enough to play for Serie A club
James Rodriguez was deemed too old for Lazio by their director Mariano Fabiani despite the Colombian winning the 2024 Copa America POTT.

James Rodriguez was simply the ‘best’ footballer at Copa America 2024. The Colombian skipper was relentless for his nation as he dragged the men in yellow to the final against Argentina earlier in July. The 33-year-old touched levels of form unseen before as he scored once and set up a whopping six assists.
Even though Argentina claimed victory in the final thanks to a late goal from Lautaro Martinez, Rodriguez was named as the Player of the Tournament and rightly so. His 7 goal contributions was one of the best numbers put up by a player in a single edition of the Copa America.
The former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich man currently plays for Brazilian club Sao Paulo in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A. With his recent form tipping himself to move back to Europe, a recent comment made by Lazio FC director Mariano Fabiani has angered fans on social media.
I'd never sign James Rodriguez, impossible. He's 33 and never played more than 12,13 games in recent years. We aren't even interested.Mariano Fabiani told the club’s official Radio channel
Fans express anger as Lazio director’s comments go viral
As rumors linked James Rodriguez to Serie A club Lazio, comments made by the Italian director have angered fans on X. Some were confused how being 33 stopped Lazio from going for the star. A supporter pointed out that Luka Modric is touching 40 and still plays for Real Madrid.
Neutrals wanted Rodriguez to prove his worth yet again, and with a stellar campaign in the Copa America to boost his morale, the stage was set for a comeback. Besides Lazio, Spanish club Rayo Vallecano have also expressed their interest in signing the star.
A fan commented that ‘attacking’ Rodriguez was uncalled for and that a simple ‘we aren’t interested’ would have sufficed. Another fan pointed out how Rodriguez would’ve been an amazing addition to Lazio and would’ve led them to a European spot unlike last season. Many called Fabiani’s comments harsh and unprofessional while others sided with the Italian.
Rodriguez was one of the most exciting talents to watch in Europe following his electric display at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Aged 33 now, the player is looking for a move back to Europe after terminating his existing contract with Sao Paulo.
