- Daniil Medvedev suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte-Carlo Masters, marking the first double bagel defeat of his career.
- Jamie Murray criticized Medvedev's racket smash, suggesting it was done for show and expressed concern over the potential danger of such actions.
- Medvedev expressed confusion over his performance, stating he felt good in practice but struggled to control the match, leading to his early exit.
After being handed a bagel in the first set by Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters, Daniil Medvedev completely lost his temper while trailing 0-2 in the second set. He flung his racket and ended up obliterating it, but not before smashing it seven times.
After letting his frustrations out on the racket, the Russian ace dumped it in a courtside bin. The crowd on Court Rainier II cheered for him when he was breaking his racket, and Andy Murray‘s brother Jamie Murray, who did not like what he saw, gave his verdict on the incident on Sky Sports.
I think he was doing it for the show. You don’t really like to see it. Also, some of the throws when that racket leaves your hand it’s completely out of your control. Who knows where it’s going to end up. It was 2-0 at that point, and it didn’t get any better for him.
Jamie Murray told Sky Sports
Wild card Berrettini also secured a double bagel win for the first time in his career. It was the Italian ace’s career’s first victory over the former World No.1 after three consecutive defeats. Murray was asked how the embarrassing defeat would affect the 2021 US Open champion.
I’m sure he’s going to be pretty embarrassed walking back into the locker room. I’d be wanting to get off-site pretty quickly if that was the performance I had put in. Obviously, he talks about clay not being her favourite surface; he won in Rome, and if you can win there, then you can play on clay. It was a big surprise to see him go down with a couple of eggs (6-0 sets). Well done to Berrettini because that is not easy to do.
Jamie Murray added
Following his victory over Medvedev, Berrettini set up his next match against Joao Fonseca. The lone clay-court title that Medvedev lifted came at the 2023 Italian Open against Holger Rune. It remains the last Big Title that Medevdev has lifted.
He did reach the final of this year’s Indian Wells Masters after knocking out seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz. But he failed to go past World No.2 Jannik Sinner in the final.
Daniil Medvedev addresses his humiliating defeat to Matteo Berrettini
Daniil Medvedev suffered a 6-0, 6-0 upset for the first time in his career. After the defeat, Medvedev, whose woes on clay have been well known, told Russian media Bolshe! that he couldn’t understand what was happening during the match.

I felt good during practice sessions; in fact, I didn’t lose a single set in practice. However, during the match, I couldn’t control anything. I couldn’t even get two balls in play, making it impossible to attempt anything. I don’t know if I should analyze what happened or just forget it quickly. I don’t understand what went wrong.
Medvedev, a one-time semifinalist in Monte Carlo, is expected to next feature at the Madrid Open, where last year, he lost to eventual champion Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals. He is a two-time quarterfinalist in Madrid, reaching the stage in 2024 and 2025.
Medvedev has already tasted victory this year. After beating Brandon Nakashima in the Brisbane International, the 30-year-old received a walkover from Tallon Griekspoor in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships.
The Monte Carlo defeat was his second consecutive early-round exit. Before arriving in Monaco, Medvedev lost to Francisco Cerundolo in the third round of the Miami Open. Last year in the Masters 1000 events, the six-time champion at this level reached two semifinals (in Indian Wells and the Shanghai Masters).
