It couldn’t have been a more dramatic end to the opening gameweek of the Premier League as Jamie Vardy came on as a substitute, scored an equalizer for Leicester City, and pulled off a celebration that silenced the Tottenham Hotspur fans. The former Premier League winner implored his way into the centre after the Foxes ran short of attacking options.
Tottenham started the game on a high and should have finished it on a victorious note had it not been for squandered opportunities. Pedro Porro opened the scoring for Spurs in the 29th minute. However, a 57th-minute equalizer from Jamie Vardy left the visitors stunned, and despite being presented with sitters, somehow Tottenham couldn’t just manage to sneak the winner.
The veteran came out as the captain of the team in the second half and earned his team a crucial point. In the post, there was a video that saw Vardy downing a can of Red Bull before taking the yard. Following which, he soared in the King Power Stadium, poaching on the mistake of Rodrigo Bentancur, assisted by Abdul Fatawu, to pummel home an equalizer.
This was followed by a gesture to the traveling fans as he pointed to the Premier League crest on his hand and showed one and zero with his fingers, signifying that Leicester City has the upper hand over Spurs in terms of PL titles.
For the unversed, Leicester City crafted history by registering their first-ever Premier League title in 2016, when Jamie Vardy was on a dream run under the chaperonage of Claudio Ranieri. Tottenham Hotspur, despite coming close, has hit the wall on multiple occasions in terms of crossing the finish line in the Premier League.
A glance at the opening week of the 2024-25 Premier League
It was an eventful start to the first week of Premier League as the season started with a narrow win for Manchester United, with their debutant Joshua Zirkzee scoring a late goal against Fulham. Liverpool also opened their account with a comprehensive win against Ipswich Town. Arsenal made no fuss either, downing Wolves with a 2-0 victory. Despite being down to 10 men, Newcastle edged past Southampton in a 1-0 win.

One of the high-octane clashes of the first week saw Manchester City beat Chelsea comfortably, too, at Stamford Bridge, as Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic found the back of the net. The week ended with Leicester City penning an upset as Tottenham Hotspur, despite dominating the game, had to return empty-handed.
