It appears the USA took it for granted when they entered the U20 World Championships as it’s the tournament for gridiron– the game America is known for. But this morning, when the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) posted the result of the USA’s matchup against Japan, everyone was left speechless.
It turns out Japan outperformed America in its own professional sport at 41-20 and became the first team to qualify for the finals, in Edmonton. Interestingly, many fans didn’t even know that the USA participated in the tournament.
As embarrassing as the loss was for America, it has sparked intense backlash on social media with Americans all across the country expressing sheer disbelief and outrage at the unexpected turn of events. Being a country that takes huge pride in its football prowess, the defeat against Japan in football hit like a tide on the rocks.
Some fans even compared it to the tragic attack in Pearl Harbor in World War II, writing, “This is worse than Pearl Harbor” and referring to the defeat as “more embarrassing than Pearl Harbour,” showcasing the sentiment of disbelief and shock among the fans. While some expressed sentiments of anger, writing, “I better not see a single one of those players step foot on US soil after this,” on X. Many even claimed they are no longer fans of U20 USA American Football.
Considering the toll of reactions from fans on social media, USA’s defeat in gridiron is considered absolutely egregious. Fans reasoned that with the intensity, football is played in America where players begin preparing for a future in the NFL since high school; even their high school should outperform any international team.
Japan defeated the USA in lopsided U20 American Football semifinal
Reaching up to the IFAF U20 World Junior Championship semifinals isn’t too big an achievement for Americans since they have expertise in that sport. The real competition began in the match against Japan, which now it appears the USA took lightly. Especially since Japan only had ever given 12 NFL players in the history of American football.
As per the reports, Japan dominated the game from the very beginning and held their opposite team down to 20-0 in the first quarter. In the entirety of the tournament, it will be the first time that Japan will be competing for the championship title of IFAF U20 World Junior.
Japan dominated the field till half-time with their strong defense and allowed their expert opponents to score not more than seven points. They continued with the same flow in the second half as well and scored the triumph at a whopping 41-20.
