The Detroit Lions grabbed their revenge over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday but at the cost of one of their star players. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson suffered a horrendous injury that left everyone inside the AT&T Stadium somber.

The Lions were cruising with a 34-6 scoreline in the third quarter. They had shut down the Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, restricting him to a couple of picks and four sacks.

It was during the fourth one that the Lions were dealt a massive blow. Hutchinson, who led the league in sacks with 6.5, pounced on the Cowboys QB after getting free of the offensive line. He completed the sack in the nick of time as he fell down before hitting the turf.

The 24-year-old edge rusher screamed in pain as players from both teams watched in confusion until they finally noticed the gruesome sight. Hutchinson’s left leg was hanging in half from the calf down.

How did Aidan Hutchinson’s leg injury happen?

Several camera angles, including the drone camera, caught the incident clearly. While Hutchinson was sacking Prescott to the ground, his left leg accidentally collided with his own teammate.

The replays showed that Hutchinson’s leg broke into two right after striking 315-pound defensive tackle Alim McNeill. It was feasible for him to stand on his feet after that challenge.

The medical team rushed for his aid, followed by the cart. As they strapped the Michigan graduate to the gurney, both Lions and Cowboys players, including the staff, flocked to check on him. Lions quarterback Jared Goff was almost in tears seeing his teammate in such a condition, as was head coach Dan Campbell, who could be seen shaking his head in remorse.

Tight end Sam LaPorta walked off the field with a towel over his head, and linebacker Alex Anzalone pulled Hutchinson close before he was carted away.

The Lions ruled him out with a lower leg injury, which may force him to stay away from football for a long time. According to renowned orthopedic doctor Tom Christ, Hutchinson may have suffered broken tibia and fibula.

Aidan Hutchinson broke onto the scene during his rookie year in 2022. The second-round pick did not miss a single game in the first two years of his NFL career and played all four games in 2024.

In 38 games for the Detroit franchise, Hutchinson recorded 119 combined successful tackles, 27.5 sacks, 28 tackles for loss, 10 pass deflections, 4 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles, and 4 fumble returns.
