The Detroit Lions are no longer in footballing mediocrity. After winning 3 games in the 2021 season, they progressed to make it to the NFC Championship game last season. A part of that growth has been some core players.

One of them, QB Jared Goff, commended his team for ensuring the core continues for the foreseeable future. Speaking at the Lions press conference after signing his extension, he thanked the Lions organization.

I think the Lions, I think they recognize that upstairs and know that we have three players that were due for a new deal and took care of them. And I think that potential free agents see that, and potential draft picks in the future see that and they know that if you play well, you are taken care of.

Basically, Goff was talking about the recent extensions for tackle Penei Sewell and wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown. Summing up how a good football team will take care of those that help them win.

Penei Sewell was recently handed a 4-year $112 million contract extension for his stellar play over the past 3 seasons, notching 2 Pro-Bowls along the way. Amon-Ra St. Brown signed a 4-year $120 million contract extension. A great return after growing from a 4th round pick to becoming one of the best in the league.

With Goff’s recent extension, it means that the core will keep playing for at least for the next 3 seasons barring anything unusual. That is why he thanked the team for making it their priority this offseason. More importantly, it keeps their Super Bowl window open.

Exciting times ahead for Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions

When an NFL team continues to grow, a core is generally visible. However, after losing in the NFC Championship game last season, the team found a silver lining. They knew which players were crucial for them to take the next step, which is why they extended the three mentioned above. However, some improvements were needed.

Most notably in the defensive backfield. Enter Carlton Davis III via trade and Terrion Arnold via the draft. Stout additions to the defensive and offensive line through both routes should improve the team. On top of all this, further improvements are expected from their existing young players.

All in all, this team has only one direction they could go from here, forward. No wonder Jared Goff, who once was cast away by his former team, is thankful for the Detroit lions to make the right decisions.
