It’s settled! Denver Broncos has named rookie Bo Nix as the starter for week 1 of the coming 2024 season. But the question remains: who shall be the backup quarterback behind him, between Jarrett Stidham or Zach Wilson?
Seems like head coach Sean Payton finally has an answer to that, but unfortunately for majority of fans, it’s not what they expected. Given that both Stidham and Wilson came strong in the training camp, the former has been steady throughout the training camp whereas the latter picked up the pace at the end and made the 53-man roster cut.
But head coach Payton has decided to hold onto the media release for the Broncos’ No. 2 quarterback until the 2024 regular season finally begins. For now, he is more focused on starting the team with rookie signal-caller Nix for the upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Interestingly, as per the rules adopted by the NFL last year, the No. 3 quarterback might still get a chance to participate in games without disrupting the long-standing 46-man active roster. However, it’s for the case of emergency, and will get the chance to enter the football field only when both prior signal-callers have been injured.
Zach Wilson’s trade rumors heat up amid the uncertain position
Between Stidham and Wilson, the former has a strong chance of becoming the team’s potential backup quarterback behind rookie starter Nix. However, this brings another scenario for Wilson’s future in the team, which seems to have a possibility of being traded elsewhere.
In those scenarios, the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings could be potential landing spots for the former New York Jets quarterback. For the Cardinals, Wilson can have a good pairing with Jonathan Gannon, if Kyler Murray again suffers a season-ending injury like last season.
On the other hand, since the Vikings lost rookie star JJ McCarthy to an injury and decided to go forward with Sam Darnold as the starter, having Wilson as the backup instead of Nick Mullens is arguably a better choice. For now, the Broncos have all of their players active and healthy for the practice on Monday, which is open to the reporters. Meanwhile, the official injury report is scheduled to be released by Wednesday.
