Jasmine Paolini’s breakthrough run at a Grand Slam, in Roland Garros, ended today at the hands of World No.1 and two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek. The French Open final was a one-sided affair that went the way of Swiatek, as it has for the last two years.

Swiatek has established her Rafael Nadal-like dominance on the Parisian clay and it seems to be an impossible task to question her authority there. Paolini recognized this after she was unable to land any big blows on Swiatek in the biggest match of her career. She thinks that what the Pole has achieved is no normal feat and her numbers are unbelievable.

She's playing unbelievable here. She's taking the balls early, taking time to you, but also using rotation. She can defend really, really well. On clay, she's unbelievable. Also on hard court, come on, she won so many tournaments this year.--But I think to play her here, it's something different. She won already four titles, and she's still 23 years old. These numbers are not normal… they are something unbelievable. I think she’s an unbelievable player.
Jasmine Paolini said in press conference after the final

Paolini had been playing incredible tennis until she crashed into the Swiatek wall today. Despite a 2-6, 1-6 defeat in the French Open final, she had only positive things to say about her performance and also about her opponent, garnering the applause of the full-house audience in the Philippe Chatrier Stadium.

Paolini, who has been ranked as high as 24 in the world in doubles, has reached the final of the French Open in the women’s doubles category as well, along with partner and compatriot Sara Errani. The 11-seeded duo dropped just one set on their way to the final. Errani also assisted Paolini in her preparations for the singles final and was present in her box during the match.

They now get another chance to shine as the fifth seeds, Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniskova, await them in the final. Iga Swiatek also wished Paolini luck for the doubles final in her victory speech, acknowledging her opponent’s multiple successes in the tournament.
