Jasmine Paolini survived an ankle injury scare in her quarterfinal comeback against home favorite Coco Gauff at the Cincinnati Open. After holding serve at the start of the third set, Paolini rolled over her ankle and slipped while hitting a running forehand. After receiving treatment, she quickly broke Gauff for a 2-0 lead, capitalizing on the American’s three double faults.

This match marked her third consecutive win over the World No. 2, whom she last defeated at the Italian Open final this year. Paolini now leads the head-to-head record 3-2 over Gauff. This match was marked by the uncharacteristically high number of unforced errors Gauff had produced. Though Gauff hit 22 winners compared to Paolini’s 7, she also had a staggering 16 double faults compared to Paolini’s 2 and 62 unforced errors compared to Paolini’s 44.

Gauff has struggled a lot since her Roland Garros victory. She had an opening round defeat in her next two matches in the grass swing. She then commenced her North American hard court swing at the Canadian Open, where she was the top seed but bowed out in the fourth round to eventual champion Victoria Mboko. The 21-year-old caught headlines for her error-stricken performance in Montreal, consisting of 42 double faults spread over three matches.

Gauff’s performance in Cincinnati was quite better than her last few tournaments but ended on a very disappointing note. On the other hand, Paolini, who had a second-round exit at Wimbledon and an opening-round exit in Montreal, has improved a lot in Cincinnati.

Jasmine Paolini comes back from a set down to defeat Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff had a strong start in the first set, getting an early break to build a 3-0 lead. Gauff won 82.4 % of her first serve points and hit two aces as she clinched the first set 6-2. The next set was closer, as both players exchanged serves.

Gauff dropped the second set to Jasmine Paolini 6-4 after losing her serve three times. Gauff continued to struggle with her serve as Paolini sealed the win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Speaking about her win, the Italian commented:

It was so tough. At the beginning, I was just running and trying to put the ball inside the court … but after a little bit, I started to feel better the ball. I stayed there every point, I tried to fight every point, and it worked.
