Jasmine Paolini, currently ranked No. 9 in the world, was recently the subject of rumors involving a possible coaching partnership with Goran Ivanisevic. The speculation quickly caught attention within the tennis world.
The story began on the Served podcast, hosted by Andy Roddick and Jon Wertheim. They suggested that Ivanisevic might join Paolini’s team for the upcoming North American swing. HO
However, the Italian media outlet Ubitennis denied the claim after speaking directly with Paolini. She confirmed that there are no plans to work with Ivanisevic at this time. The Italian said as reported by UbiTennis:
I have never spoken to Goran Ivanisevic, I have never contacted him.
Paolini, who was eliminated in her first match in Montreal, is currently coached by Federico Gaio. She made the switch after ending her collaboration with Marc Lopez following her second-round loss at Wimbledon.
Jasmine Paolini hires new coach
Italian tennis star Jasmine Paolini has started working with Federico Gaio after parting ways with Marc Lopez following Wimbledon. Gaio, an active ATP player, steps in as her new coach despite not competing professionally for over a year. Their partnership begins as Paolini looks to reset her season.

Paolini had brought Lopez on board after her strong performance at the Miami Open in March. That move ended her decade-long collaboration with former coach Renzo Furlan. Although she found success with Lopez, including winning the Rome title and reaching the Stuttgart semifinals, they decided to split after Wimbledon.
Federico Gaio, who debuted in 2009, has won four Challenger titles in his career. Meanwhile, Marc Lopez, once ranked No. 3 in doubles, won major titles like the Australian Open and an Olympic gold medal with Rafael Nadal in 2016. Lopez had been part of Nadal’s team until retiring in late 2024.
Recently, Paolini pulled out of the Hopman Cup due to knee discomfort. The withdrawal came after a tough second-round loss to Kamilla Rakhimova, where the world No. 9 appeared to be struggling physically. The injury sparked concern among her fans.
Jasmine Paolini suffers shocking defeat at the Canadian Open
The biggest surprise of the day came when Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito defeated seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/5). It was a stunning comeback by the 21-year-old, who rallied from a set and a break down to win the match in two hours and 27 minutes.

In the first round, Ito had earned her first WTA 1000-level victory by beating American Katie Volynets. Her win over Paolini was also her first against a top-10 player, marking a major milestone in her young career. Currently ranked 110 in the world, Ito saved a match point in the second set’s 10th game. She managed to hold her nerve and edged out the sixth-ranked Italian to reach the third round before being knocked out by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Ito had reached the semifinals in Osaka during her WTA debut last October. She also won a 125-level event in Canberra earlier this year. However, before this tournament, she had not won a main-draw match on tour in 2025.
