In 2021, the world of golf was left divided when a new circuit in LIV Golf was announced. Several big names would leave the PGA Tour and join this Saudi-funded tour. Former World No.1 Jason Day was one of them who was exploring a move to this tour but ended up getting rejected. Recently, he revealed the reason why.
After a breakout season in 2015, where he won five times, including the PGA Championship, the Australian golfer climbed up to number one in the World Rankings. Injuries have since played a major part in his career, which eventually saw him fall outside of the top 100 in the rankings and go on a long, winless run.
His injury record is the reason why the 54-hole circuit rejected him. In an interview with Code Sports Australia, Day stated that it was a business move and added that he does not “blame them” for this.
Jason Day says his agent reached out to LIV Golf for a deal but they wouldn’t offer him a contract because he gets “too many injuries.”

“What happened was, it was a business move to just go in and explore the potential of what would happen. I said [to my agent], ‘No worries, I’m… https://t.co/HTqKklXPMg
There had been speculations that Day would likely have been part of Cameron Smith‘s Rippers GC team. Given that the team consists of Australian golfers, it would have made sense if Day had ended up alongside Smith on LIV Golf.
In the end, Day remained on the PGA Tour and broke his winless run in 2023 with a triumph at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Before this, he admitted to having considered retirement from the sport due to his injuries.
Jason Day hoping for the golf civil war to end with the PGA Tour-PIF merger deal
Following the announcement of the golf merger deal between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF), several golfers have been waiting for the moment for this deal to go through. Jason Day is one of them who wants this to happen soon and bring an end to the golf civil war.
In the interview with Code Sports Australia, the 13-time PGA Tour winner claimed that there are several players on the LIV Golf who are missed on the PGA Tour.
Some marquee names who left the PGA Tour include Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Phil Mickelson. All of these players left the PGA Tour and joined LIV Golf on big contracts.
As of yet, there has been no proper timeline set for this merger to go through. While a report from The Sun recently claimed that the $1.3 billion deal was done, Rory McIlroy quickly shut down these reports and claimed he had no idea about it.
