Even before Patrick Mahomes ended his season on the injury reserve list, his star tight end, Travis Kelce, was the subject of retirement rumors, especially after his struggles this season.

Those have been a continuation of how it was last campaign. Finishing with his career-low in yards and yards per reception was not indicative enough of how bad it was, at least in the initial part of their 2024 campaign.

What made it worse was that their winning streak seemingly masked any real indication of a downturn in his performances. This time, since the Chiefs have been evidently struggling, Kelce’s future has been the subject of debate.

After his embarrassing effort against the Texans in Week 14, those doubts grew louder. Then, Mahomes’ season-ending injury has added further fuel to those questions.

To nail that decision, you gotta step away from the game for a little bit… The team’s going to be different no matter whether you come back or not. So enjoy these last 3 games. Then, let it sink in. It will come to you with time… It’s too fresh.

The Super Bowl champion believes that right now, it is too soon to make any decision. An athlete should take his or her time to decide on such matters. Therefore, he hopes Travis Kelce finishes his season and then takes a couple of months to decide if he wants to give his career one last chance.

Ryan Clark believes Patrick Mahomes’ injury complicates Travis Kelce’s future

As Travis Kelce and his teammates start preparing to rebound from a playoff-eliminating loss, they know Patrick Mahomes will not be leading them out into battle.

Gardner Minshew will be the one throwing to the tight end and the rest of the receiver core, as they work to try to finish the season on a high note.

It would feel extremely odd if somebody other than Patrick Mahomes throws Travis Kelce his last completion.

Ryan Clark said

The former safety believes it will be odd that the 36-year-old, who has played most of his career receiving catches from the Texas Tech alum, would want to finish his career with a pass from any other QB.

After all, Kelce’s best seasons have come with Mahomes throwing him the football. 3 Super Bowls and a Hall of Fame resume are incomplete without the signal caller’s contribution, and that is where Clark believes the tight end could continue.

Then there is the part of a competitive athlete’s life, where he wants to finish on a high, and not when he and his team are at their lowest point.

Derwin James and Travis Kelce had heartwarming exchange after game

The last time Travis Kelce faced the Los Angeles Chargers, he caused some furor by playing the victim in his attempts to try to lure an opposing defender into committing a penalty. Other than those antics, the Ohio native is also respected for what he has done on and off the field. That is why star safety Derwin James came up to the 10-time Pro-Bowler and asked for his jersey.

The Chargers star may be one of those who believe that Kelce could hang it up anytime soon, and after giving him his respect, asked for the jersey to be delivered.

On the other hand, the tight end let James know that he expects the defensive back to continue doing what he does, and leads his Chargers into the postseason. After saying that, Kelce let the 29-year-old know that he will indeed get the jersey ready and deliver it to him.
