After an improvement in form since the turn of the year, Jason Kidd‘s Dallas Mavericks seem to have hit a roadblock once again this season. With Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis ruled out, the Mavs continue to struggle to find wins. They suffered a narrow 111-107 defeat to the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center on Saturday night.

The defeat to the Rockets extended the Mavs’ losing streak to four games. Their record dropped to 19-30 as they sit out of the play-in spots at 11th in the Western Conference standings. Meanwhile, the Rockets continued their fine form at home and improved their record to 30-17 as they find themselves at fourth in the standings.

Number one pick of the 2025 NBA draft, Cooper Flagg has been the only spark for head coach Jason Kidd this season. The rookie was coming off a career-high 49 points against the Charlotte Hornets and put in an impressive performance on Saturday once again. Flagg recorded a double-double, scoring 34 points to go along with 12 rebounds and five assists.

During the start of the 2025-26 campaign, Kidd was under fire for playing Flagg as a point guard in the absence of Irving. But it appears the decision is proving good halfway through the season. Flagg’s ball-handling and passing have improved throughout the campaign.

Following the loss, Kidd was asked about Flagg’s role as the team’s primary ball-handler and was visibly upset by the question. Before the question could be fully asked about Flagg becoming a good ball handler, Kidd interrupted the reporter.

I don’t give a f*** about the criticism. That’s your opinion. You guys write that bulls***… I’ve done this. I’ve played this game. I played it at a very high level. I know what the f*** I’m doing, and I don’t give a f*** what you guys write because you guys have never played the game. So, to take criticism, it only makes me better, because if I wasn’t doing it right, you guys wouldn’t be poking holes at what I’ve done. That’s it. Thanks.

After his response, Kidd stormed off from the press conference. Flagg has received a lot of praise this season, including from teammate Davis, who spoke about the 19-year-old’s growth since the season began. Flagg is currently averaging 19.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists.

Fans react to Jason Kidd storming off the press conference

Kidd’s reaction to the question was quick to go viral across social media, and NBA fans did not waste any time expressing their opinions on the internet. Here are some of the reactions:

The fans largely supported Kidd was his reaction. Kidd’s reaction was understandable as Flagg has shown that he is more comfortable on the ball today.

Kyrie Irving likely to return after the All-Star break

While it was expected that Irving would be ruled out for the entire 2025-26 campaign, latest reports have suggested that his recovery has come a long way and he is likely to make a return as early as the All-Star break. It has been reported that:

While the Mavericks have not publicly communicated a return timetable for Irving, sources tell Dallas Hoops Journal there has been no indication he will be shut down for the season. Instead, the prevailing expectation is that Irving’s return would more realistically come after the NBA All-Star break as it stands, rather than before it.

With Irving’s return looking likely now, the Mavs will hope that Davis will be able to return from his left hand injury after the All-Star break as well, as they received some good news that the former Lakers star will not require any surgery. Prior to his ACL injury last season, Irving was averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists.
