Jason Kidd rips apart Mavericks team
The Dallas Mavericks suffered a crushing last-second loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. The Mavs fell 114-113 after a controversial free throw by Jusuf Nurkic put the Suns on top with a second to spare. Following the game, Mavs HC Jason Kidd did not hold back on criticism of his team. The 51-year-old coach ripped apart his team’s performance, especially the lackluster display of his bench.
The Mavericks played an 11-man rotation, with six players coming off the bench. However, of Dallas’ 113 points, the team’s bench provided just nine points across the entire game.
The primary scoring duties lay entirely on the Mavericks’ starters. Kyrie Irving and Luka Donic combined for 59 points to lead the scoring charge from the Mavs. A frustrated Jason Kidd addressed the media after the game.

“For whatever reason, we’re getting off to a slow start, it’s gotta be addressed…Somebody’s gotta come with some f***ing energy. We’re f***ing flat…Our bench stinks right now…As deep as we are, we got to get someone to f***ing participate off… pic.twitter.com/5xAdgegCN4
Jason Kidd delivered a scathing rant about the lack of energy and urgency from his team to begin the game, going as far as to say that their bench ‘stinks.’ The veteran coach was evidently peeved by the lack of intent and almost non-existent scoring output from his bench players.
The Mavericks bench consists of some solid players, such as Spencer Dinwiddie, Quentin Grimes, and Dwight Powell. However, the team dearly missed their bench strength, with a number of key players missing the game due to injury. Danté Exum, Maxi Kleber, Dereck Lively II and PJ Washington remained out with injuries. They were crucial players for Jason Kidd’s Mavericks in their Finals run last season.
Can Jason Kidd get the Mavericks back on track?
The Dallas Mavericks took the league by storm last season. The Mavericks ran through the Western Conference, defeating the likes of the LA Clippers, OKC Thunder and the Minnesota Timberwolves before reaching the NBA finals. A huge part of their success was coach Jason Kidd and his bench units. The group of Derrick Lively II, PJ Washington, Derrick Jones Jr. and Daniel Gafford played a crucial role for the team.
Even though the Mavericks lost Jones Jr. in the offseason, the team maintained its core from last season with the addition of sharpshooters Klay Thompson and Quentin Grimes. However, even after these acquisitions, the Mavericks are off to a shaky start with a 5-4 record so far. They sit at the 10th spot in a cutthroat Western Conference.
The responsibility will come down to HC Jason Kidd to get his team back on track and playing like a contender. Although Doncic had a slow start to the season, he has picked up pace since, averaging nearly 31 points on 39.5% from downtown over his last four games. The team will look to their coach to fix the glaring bench issues they face.
