Angel Reese sitting out will negate Caitlin Clark' WNBA resurgence, feels Jason Whitlock

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have spearheaded the WNBA’s resurgence and brought them to the international spotlight. Now, their union representatives are in discussions with the league over their new pay structure that will take effect in the 2026 season.

Everyone is aware that the league is the fastest growing brand and could start turning a profit soon. The new media rights deal will help in a major way as will the uptick in ticket and merchandise sales. The momentum that Reese and Clark brought, will help team owners thrive, and overall values to rise up.

Keeping that in mind, the 22-year-old suggested she and players should sit out if they do not get a good deal from the owners. But this comment started a major debate online with many fans targeting the Chicago Sky star for juxtaposing what she and others have done so far.

This was Angel Reese‘s post on X a day after that episode of her podcast released. She stood by her comments and reiterated that she will continue to hold that logic. Her belief is that players in the league should get what they deserve.

Jason Whitlock believes Angel Reese is not helping Caitlin Clark

Over the course of sporting history, several such situations have happened. Players have resorted to lockouts when they did not get the deal, they were looking for the first time around. But journalist Jason Whitlock believes the WNBA is not in a similar position as other leagues.

They should just be careful. They are gonna risk ruining a good thing. The last thing they need is some sort of sports stoppage. Work stoppages will irritate fans and there will have lasting impact from that.

Whitlock referenced how the MLB had to work hard to get back irritated fans. But the league was already in a good place and therefore, just had to put on a show when they returned to bring the excitement back.

The WNBA is not in a similar position. He believes the league’s current growth centers around Caitlin Clark. Without her, whatever Angel Reese and the others say or want to do, will not matter. Therefore, if they are responsible for work stoppage, whatever fans the league has garnered will look elsewhere.

The WNBA has benefitted when its parent, the NBA, has been struggling. Bored basketball fans switched over to the women’s game. But if these women follow the 22-year-old Chicago Sky star’s lead and sit out, fans could switch over to another women’s sport or even back to the NBA.
