Ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah showed off his bond with bowling partner Mohammed Siraj, inspiring many with a selfless act on the first day of the opening Test match against West Indies. Bumrah deliberately bowled in a manner to allow Siraj to complete his five-wicket haul.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have established themselves as India’s foremost fast-bowling duo over the past few years. They were on fire on the opening day of the first Test match against West Indies, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. They tore through the Caribbean batting lineup, making full use of the green surface, to bowl out the visitors for just 162 runs in 44.1 overs.
Siraj kick-started the rampage, picking up opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s wicket. Bumrah followed soon after, removing John Campbell in the 7th over. The rest of the West Indies lineup was sent back to the pavilion by the end of the day, with Bumrah finishing with figures of 3/42 in his 14-over spell. Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets, while Washington Sundar scalped a wicket in his three overs.
However, what surprised fans was Jasprit Bumrah’s selfless act, that highlighted the camaraderie that he shares with his bowling partner, Mohammed Siraj. The 31-year-old had already dismissed Johann Layne off the first ball of the 41st over with a stunning yorker, to reduce West Indies to 153/9. Bumrah then bowled the last four balls of the over far outside the off-stump, purposely attempting to keep the ball away from the stumps and avoid taking the final wicket himself.

The gesture prompted commentator Dinesh Karthik to suggest that Jasprit Bumrah wanted to give Siraj a shot at completing his fifer. However, Siraj could not reach the five-wicket milestone in the end, finishing with figures of 4/40. The last wicket was scalped by Kuldeep Yadav in the 45th over. He dismissed Jomel Warrican, who tried to hit a reverse sweep, but the ball brushed his glove to land into the keeper’s hands.

Meanwhile, the Men in Blue had to come out to bat in the final stages of the first day’s play, finishing with 121/2 on the board. KL Rahul remains unbeaten with 53 runs off 114 deliveries, supported by Shubman Gill on the other end of the crease.
Historic Milestone: Jasprit Bumrah Becomes Joint-Fastest Indian Pacer to 50 Home Test Wickets
With a three-wicket haul in the opening Test against West Indies, Jasprit Bumrah set a new benchmark among Indian pace bowlers in red-ball cricket history. The 31-year-old became the joint-fastest Indian pace bowler, in terms of innings taken, to reach 50 wickets in Test matches at home.

Bumrah first took the wicket of John Campbell in the 7th over of the first innings. He then dismissed all-rounder Justin Greaves in the 39th over, who had top-scored for West Indies with a 32-run knock off 48 deliveries, before finishing his spell with the wicket of Johann Layne. Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar made it look like a one-sided contest, in favor of the home side.
The 31-year-old achieved the feat of being the joint-fastest Indian pacer to take 50 Test wickets at home in the 24 innings he played for the Men in Blue, delivered across a total of 1747 balls. With 50 wickets at home, Bumrah equaled the legendary pacer Javagal Srinath‘s record. They are followed by former India captain Kapil Dev (25 innings), and Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami (27 innings).
Furthermore, Bumrah also went past South African pace icon Dale Steyn on the list of fast bowlers with the most wickets through ‘bowled’ dismissals in the longest format. The Indian star now has 66 ‘bowled’ wickets, and is only four behind Shami’s record of 70 dismissals.
