Jasson Dominguez will not be part of the New York Yankees’ Opening Day roster. Despite some strong showings in the Spring Training, the outfielder was demoted to the minor leagues by the team to make roster space.

There was a lot of speculation regarding his future. Even before he reported to the training camp, the player understood that there could be no room for him in the outfield of the Yankees for the 2026 season after the offseason they had.

After the 2025 campaign, the Yankees extended a qualifying offer to Trent Grisham. The player would accept this and re-sign with the team on a one-year deal.

Following this, the team re-signed Cody Bellinger on a 5-year, $162.5 million deal. With him, Grisham and Aaron Judge locking in the outfield positions, Dominguez would not play daily.

To manage his game time, the team demoted him to the minor league. The 23-year-old will begin his 2026 campaign with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Nicknamed “The Martian“, Dominguez has been one of the top prospects of the Yankees in recent years. He burst onto the major league scene in September 2023.

In his first at-bat, he went up against veteran Justin Verlander. He would take the future Hall of Famer yard as he smashed a 2-run home run on his debut.

The Dominican Republic international would go 8-for-31 in his first 8 games with the Yankees and hit 4 home runs. He was then diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, requiring Tommy John surgery.

Since this injury, Dominguez has struggled a bit. Last season, he took part in 123 games and hit 10 home runs and had 47 RBIs with a .257 batting average.

His defense in left field has also been a problem. As per reports from The Athletic, Dominguez ranked 24th among 25 left fielders with at least 500 innings played at the position, in Defensive Runs Saved at minus-7. He also ranked last in Outs Above Average (OAA) at minus-10.

Yankees fans on social media were not happy with this. On X, they would take a swipe at the team’s front office and call them out. One user wrote, “ruining this guy“, while expressing their feelings regarding this development.

Check out that and some other reactions from X below:

Speaking of the Spring Training, Dominguez went 13-for-40. He hit 3 home runs and had 10 RBIs while batting with a .325 average.

Aaron Boone “proud” of Jasson Dominguez despite demotion to minor league

Despite a strong showing in Spring Training, Jasson Dominguez was unable to secure a starting position in the outfield for the New York Yankees. Aaron Boone, however, is “proud” of the way the 23-year-old handled himself.

While speaking with the reporters, the Yankees manager expressed that they wanted him to play regularly. The only way this could happen right now was by sending him to the Triple-A.

I’m proud of him. He walked into this camp with all kinds of conversation around him. It didn’t affect anything in the way he carried himself, day in, day out, the way he worked. … You want him playing regularly and that’s ultimately what it comes down to.

Aaron Boone said regarding Jasson Dominguez

Dominguez could still get some playing time for the Yankees this season. Earlier in the offseason, Giancarlo Stanton expressed that he was still having trouble with his elbows.

If he misses some games due to this, Dominguez could be called up to the team and be made the designated hitter (DH) of the team.

Only time will eventually tell what happens next with the former No.1 prospect. For now, he will turn his attention to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
